7.62 Ball Ammo on Coyote?

Hi All,

I'm having trouble finding any softpoint 7.62x54R locally.

I just picked up 100 rounds of Brown Bear 185gr spitzer.

I'm wondering how a .30-06 class round performs on coyote sized varmints with FMJ ammo. I'm stuck with it until I find (or, maybe just this time, order from the 'net) some softpoint.

I wouldn't use it on deer, but shooting a water jug vaporized quite a bit of it, and showed energy transfer at least equal to at least a good 9mm expanding round.

I'm thinking hydrostatic shock may come into play here. It's something I dismissed long ago, but I hadn't done anything extensive with rounds running around 3000fps yet either.

7.62 Ball Ammo on Coyote?

Hi Josh,

The hardest part about coyote hunting is getting a shot. I spent a few days trying in the off season in Montana. I could call them in and get answers and they would approach me but the darn things will sneak up on you and spot you and run for cover you before you can get a site picture. Hats off to anybody that can shoot a coyote.

I'm sure a 30-06 class round will do the job if it goes through the chest cavaty.

7.62 ball is the worst choice. It goes in and out, if you miss all the vitals........ the critter just runs off to suffer needlessly. Until you get a "good / proper bullet" please don't. I hunt but I believe in being ethical about if. It's all about quick, clean kills. Good luck. I hope you find some great ammunition. Me, I hand load for every center fire gun I have.

Don't even think about using ball for hunting. Hunting with non-expanding (ball) ammo is a big no-no. It will land you in court in most jurisdiction.

Indiana may consider coyotes varmints or pests, and may have different rules regarding fmj. But a 30-06 going thru a yote should put it down humanely enough, I would think.

Here you go Josh. This should put you into the coyote ballpark. Coyote shots can be very long shots, so I'd personally prefer the 150 grain offering to the 185 grain. I think the 185 is too slow and drops too much for long range coyote shooting, although it would be ok for ground sluicing them close in, IMHO. I'd steer clear of using FMJ on critters - it's illegal in a lot of states.
