Let's see... with advice from various folks I've managed to change out the sights on the MKIII from the clunky Millett adjustables to Trijicons. I've installed the heavier (18.5 lb.) recoil spring and have certified that the gun works with the ammunition I've settled on as carry loads. (The magazine in the gun is the 125-grain Cor Bon +P, while the reload is normally the 124-grain Federal Hydra Shok. Both have been tested for functioning, and both hit very close to POA.)

I don't like the spurred hammer, so today I went to the C&S website and got a C&S Commander style hammer. I ordered a Ross M5S holster but found very quickly that, as with other holsters, the MKIII ambidextrous safety "slides off" with any movement, and since the thumbreak is very hard to snap into place, I'm virtually assured of carrying a gun with no safety engaged at all. Thus, my order to C&S also included an extended safety such as the one I installed on the late 70s Belgian. This safety is much, much more positive.

The last thing I'm adding (for now, at least) is a beefed up trigger return spring. I've had a couple of occasions during rapid fire when the trigger would not return fully into battery, so I was forced to do a second trigger release in order to fire the next round.

Oh yeah, I'm also going to order a recoil buffer, but it'll have to wait till I need something else from someplace where I can also get the buffer.

I realized this morning that this project has now cost me a lot more than I could ever get for the gun, but it's probably a good bit less than it would cost to have someone else do the work for me. And I've had a lot of fun, which is a good thing.

Leland,

Sounds like your ready to go! The idea of the shock buff is probably a good one. When installed you won't be able to lock the slide back. That may change once you shoot it a bit and "seat" the buffer. Funny you mentioned it. I just put buffers in both my hi-powers.

My own 9mm BHP was set up by the lads at Cylinder & Slide. They do damn good work. Mine is no longer stock, but highly modified to include a bar-sto barrel and buried bo-mars'.

I like your idea of the heavier trigger return spring. That may help with the reset "problem" some experienced(me). That's what I get for being a 1911 guy.

I'll discuss holsters under the General topics so I don't poach your thread.

Take care

Hi there Leland,

I can't wait to see a picture of the finished product! You have accomplished so much that I would enjoy the opportunity of attempting that project myself. However, I have not run into too many used HP's around here.

I have had great success with the C & S extra power trigger return spring in my PJK 9 HP. Initially, I had problems with trigger reset, but it was caused by an improperly installed trigger pin (I didn't have the groove in the pin lined up with the spring).

I have built two 1911's with the help of a gunsmith friend who help me with the final fitting and finishing. I can attest to the fact that for what I invested in parts, I could have bought a brand new 1911 with all of the bells and whistles.

However, the education was priceless for me.

Enjoy!

The only things that'll look different here will be the hammer and safety. I've installed one of the C&S extended safeties on another gun. The second photo is a closeup of the C&S safety.

Here's the new sight picture over the Trijicons.

Hi there Leland,

The pictures finally set me off and I traded for a Mark III/9mm today!

I guess now that I have a project gun and hopefully not too much of one at that.

I really like the modifications you have made as they are quite sensible on a carry gun. I already have a Galco Avenger holster for my BHP and will be checking it for the safety issue for concealed carry applications.
