I find the disengagement of my Walther PP's stiff safety a slow process. Does carrying it with the safety off present a potential safety problem? In particular, is there a danger of an accidental discharge if the pistol is dropped? Thanks for any responses.

I've carried one in the past without the safety applied and the hammer down, that is used the safety as a decocker and then taken it back off. I haven't had any problems or concerns.

That's the way my wife carries her Bersa 22, and the way I would carry my Makarov. No different than a D/A revolver.
