Im not sure I have the right answer, but I would say that it is becuase it is between the 9mm and .45 in side, and both are common calibers and both work well in shootings.
It offers a pretty large caliber with nearly the same ammo capacity as the 9mm and the energy and expansion of the .45.
Hello. I'd guess because it can make "major caliber" rating in those competitions where such is a factor in scoring and having more momentum than the 9mm, it's better at falling plates. Being smaller diameter than .45, an extra shot or two can be had between reloads.
