I have an S&W Model 19 that I think has two serial numbers but I can't tell which is the serial number and which is a property number. ABL6187 is stamped above the "19-5" on the gun and on the bottom of the grip. 91627 is stamped on the crane and under the grips. So which is which? Please help.

Hiya Matt,

The ABL6187 would be the S/N. The other is either a rack number or (more likely) an assembly number used at the factory.

S&W went to the three letter/four number serial numbers about 1980. The 19-5 and the S/n all correlate to being made about 1983.

On modern S&W's the serial number is almost always on the botton of the of the frame on the butt.

Hope this helps some.

Pat

Hey Pat,
Thanks for the response. I think you're right about the one number being a shelf or internal factory code. I think you are right on with the year, too. I knew that it was in the early '80s, like '82 or so.

Most welcome sir. Always happy to be able to give back to this community as much help as I've gotten. I run a severe deficit I'm afraid. :)
