Hello. Many folks trust the .45 ACP for "serious purposes" and many prefer the 1911 platform. Others may feel the same but are forbidden by agency rules from carrying a single-action autopistol. Yet others are uncomfortable with cocked and locked or don't trust the 1911.

If you were going to tote a .45 ACP in an auto other than the 1911, what's your choice?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Best.

If I get the mag issues sorted out, a Ruger P97DC. I am not much enthused about DA/SA pistols but this one handles well, has a very manageable DA as well as SA, and shoots very well for me.

As to the mags, I get a 7th round pop-out approx every 32 rounds. Each of 5 identical mags acts the same way. Have been fighting it for some time now and may have it narrowed down to the McCormick stamped follower.

Will be trying three suggested fixes; swap in a 1911 GI follower; install P90 followers and springs; and install Wilson 1911 8 round plastic followers and springs. Ruger admits to "rare" problems with the current factory mags.

I am quite impressed with the pistol itself as a basic duty piece. If I can get it to run the way it's supposed to it will be a winner. I just hate to let it beat me as I think it has real potential.

Glocks are too big for me and can't stand the triggers. SIGs are good guns but about 10% too big for my hand, and the DA is only so-so. I shoot the P97 far better...

It may say something that for my last 6 or so years of work I had the option of carrying the 220 and stuck with the 4" .357. I did (and do) have a lot of confidence in that old wheelgun.

Well, I'm of a generation that, though I can appreciate the functional elegance of the 1911, I am not so fiercely loyal to it as to preclude other gun choices.

That makes this an easy choice for me...

Uh-oh. Not really. It'd be so much easier to say, "1911. Have a nice day."

So is it Tide, Cheer or Arm&Hammer? With or without color-safe bleach, colors or fragrance? Summer Breeze, Lemon Fresh or Garden Potpourri?

How 'bout a single-stack RugerP with decocker or a BersaThunder45? Wins my affordability quotient (and that new Ruger 345 sure is a looker). If not that, then maybe a Taurus 945 or 24/7 (with a 12-rnd mag! Yea!). Also very affordable.

The previous choices and 1911 aside, I'd have to say that I'm very eagerly awaiting the introduction of Springfield's XD in .45ACP.

Dear Mr. Camp,

If I were to select a .45 calibre handgun not on a 1911 platform, my choices would be:

A Glock Model 36/Model 21
Sig Sauer Model 220
H & K USP

Please note that that these are all on my wish list :)

I've handled the big glocks but they never caught my interest. I'd pick a HK USP. A buddy has one and it feels nice, almost as nice as my 1911.

I love 1911A1s but it will be no surprise to many that I use a Bersa Thunder 45 as a car/carry gun. The Bersa 45 is one of the best kept secrets there is. Regards, Richard

Gents,

No 1911's. Man you ARE pushing t he envolope! In a worst case scenario I'd select the SIG 220 and not look back. For a small concealment pistol I vote for the G36.

Luckily, I have both.

If I could fix the problem I have seating fully loaded mags on a closed slide, the G30. This problem is much worse than any other auto I've shot, and the only reason I do not have one of these soft shooting & accurate pistols.
If not fixable & a 1911 is not possible, the P220 is good, or maybe a 4" S&W N frame.

I'm pretty "single(simple) minded", so I would check out the CZ or EAA varients of the ACP. I believe EAA has a SA 45 ACP model. Convert the CZ 97B to SA only?

Hello, Jim! Nope, no plot! Just a variation on the old "If you could only have one..." theme. I wanted to see what "our" folks think as opposed to what I've seen on other boards. Just sort of a "gedanken" project.

Best.

Like Mr Camp said, it would be gut wrenching :) but probably either the Glock 21 or the CZ97. Those of you that haven't shot the CZ97 need to try it out. Very accurate pistol, built like a tank, and cheap.
