Hello,

The local Walmart is selling standard pressure 115gr Remington HP (not GS) in bulk packs of 100 for a little under $20.

Is this a good value for this ammunition? I'm trying to get stored up.

Thanks,

Josh <><

Nowadays that sounds real good, Even the whitebox winchester ball was 15 last time the wife bought some. Think I will let her know. Sometimes you can catch deals at Bass Pro shop if one is around you on Remington or Winchester, with there 10% off everything for Active Military policy usually can beat Wally world. not that it would matter to me because I wont step foot in a Walmart.

Hello Josh,

I personally feel the Value Pack Ammo (Regardless of Brand) is Junk. Yes, some guns run on it and some don't. There's also a lot of variation from Lot to Lot and even shot to shot with in the same Lot.

You & your gun(s) will be much better served with the mid-line 50 round boxes (loadings).

Take Care.

Hi Gents,

Thank you.

I'm actually looking for a second line ammo - I'm loaded with 124gr Bonded GS right now, and have plenty of Black Hills GD and other premium HP and expanding loads left.

Not my first choice either. But, if I can get something cheap in quantity then I will - if for the security of having it, if nothing else. For example, after I learned a bit I started carrying the premium stuff, but kept stocking up on Federal 9bp (now C9BP), which was my first carry load. That's long since been shot, and my local source for them has dried up.

I will not ship ammo, and like Joe, I'm not fond of Walmart for reasons which are beyond the scope of this board's discussion range. However, I make an exception for ammunition (sometimes). A deal is a deal unless the ammo doesn't perform.

I did carry Rem 115gr +P a couple years back until a shipment of my preferred load of that time, Cor

Hello Josh,

Not trying to drift the thread, but, my local shops don't stock Federal C9BP either, but, they always order it for me when I ask, and it only takes a coupla days to get it. They don't gouge me either just because they ordered it in especially for me.

The Federal C9BP is The Best mid-line 115gr. 9mm ammo one could hope for.

Have you ever asked your shop to order it?

Take Care.

Hi Mr. Reed,

Yes I have and no they won't - not for any price that I couldn't order it for my self, anyway.

Like I've said in other threads, my gunstore is goofy that way. There's one further out in the country, but their attitudes turned me off. I may have to go out there though, because they are authorized Federal Ammunition distributors.

Thanks,

Josh <><

P.S. May buy this stuff anyway for a woods load. I have the 3D factory reloads for the 38 Spl snubby, but nothing second-string for the 9mm. J.S.

I've been buying the Remington 100-packs ( L9MM1B) for a year or so. Its cheap enough I can afford to plink with it, practice with it, and check all the guns and magazines with it. So far it has worked fine for me. Wetpack results I saw someplace were less impressive than Gold Dots or Golden Sabers. No argument that the buck-a-round premium stuff is 'better'.

Folks who can afford better should buy what they can afford.

Those Remington bulk-pack hollowpoints have always worked well for me. They are old-tech hollowpoints, but they are the very round-nosed kind from the '80s that feed in almost everything. I've chrono'd them, and they're a little faster than the WWB 115-gr FMJs in every gun I've run them in.

I wouldn't feel bad if these were the only hollowpoints I could afford or find.

For a high volume backup round have you considered a bulk order from a comercial reloader like Geogia Arms ? I just checked and they still dont beat 20 per hundred on hollowpoints, but they do have new manufactured +p golddots for 17 per 50 which isnt too shabby, I dont remember you posting any reloading posts but it looks like you carry fancy name premium stuff but want a large stock for a rainy day or katrina like situation, I'd bulk order some Montana Gold or Zero hollowpoints reuse your brass and even with buying a single stage press kit you'd quickly be saving money per shot. All that being said I have never had any problems with Remington or Winchester value pack ammo, I have used alot of the Winchester whitebox both the hollowpoints and ball. The hollow point allways comes in with identical performance as the silvertips. I dont see why a manufacturer would go through the expense of creating a seperate assembly line to make crappy ammo. The lower price I believe come primarily from less markup, simplier cheaper packaging, the rounds are just dumped in a box probably by weight instead of loaded into plastic trays. Also probably some shipping savings. A 100 round value box of WWB is half the size of a 50 round box with tray. Another thing to consider though is Winchester now has a disclaimer on their USA ammo stating USA is a brand and not meant to imply ammo is made in USA so it's probably coming from the Phillipines and could be the source of the problem and inconsitent ammo.

Hello,

I just got flat out curious and bought some.

They come in plastic trays instead of loose and look to be good quality. I measured each of them and they vary hardly at all in length.

I'll see how they run in my pistol. If they're consistent I'll buy more, but ONLY if they're up to snuff for carry in an emergency situation (Joe, you were partially right about that).

I am perfectly comfortable carrying ball ammo for defense. However, I am a bit nervous about overpenetration with ball ammo in 38 Spl up, so I look for something with a "parachute effect." I figure if I can put the same amount of money into hollowpoint practice/knocking around/second string ammo as I do solids and get the same amount, there shouldn't be any reason not to do so.

The Bonded Golden Saber remains my carry ammo for this gun, but I won't turn my nose up at any ammo with a respectably sized hollowpoint. I'm talking anything bigger than the "softpoint with a pinhole" from the days of old.

I'll run it through some denim and milkjugs or denim and wetpack, and then I'll be sure. 'Til then, I'll figure the terminal ballistics to be similar to ball. I do know that this exact style functions well in my gun, even if I do consider it a bit dirty - I had, I think I mentioned, the +P version of this stuff.

Thank you to all who responded,

Josh <><

I generally put ammo into three categories. Reloads for blasting and practice regardless if I make them or buy them. Match ammo which is generally somebodys white/gree/yellow box ammo. Generally I find it at either the gun shows, discount houses or Dicks (I too am not a Wallyworlder). Then there is Premium ammo. JHP high performance stuff I test and then carry. In 9mm I like the +P+ 127 WIN or 115 9BPLE from FED. In 38 +P 158 LSWC WIN and in 45 ACP 230 FED Hydrashock.

Ammo prices are going up. So is fuel, milk and cheerios. I have seen it go up and go down.

Gregory,

Thank you. Have you done any testing? I was going to do so today but a storm was threatening, with a heat index to match (muggy ain't got nothin' on Indiana muggy!). I didn't want to get out there only to find myself (and my digicam
) caught in a downpour.

Tomorrow's not looking much better. I'm getting cabin fever!

Is this stuff dirty to shoot, or is it relatively clean compared to others? WWB was always clean in my firearms...

Thanks,

Josh <><
