In Tennessee for me:

CHL class $55.00

1 box of 25 year old .38 special wadcutters given to me when I was a cop.

Tennessee Department of Safety application $115.00

so $170.00 total for the first time, good for 4 years.

$50.00 renewal fee

Took 65 days from date of application to receiving permit. The State has 90 days to either issue or deny.

Passport photos from local camera store: $12 (used only for ID purposes at time of application, so any clear snapshot or Polaroid will do)

$100 fee for permit
$24 for fingerprints at MHP

Then wait ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS until permit arrives in mail. State law says "no more than" 120 days, but the Department of Public Safety (MHP) reads it as "make them wait the full time." Recently I've heard of permit times in excess of 130 days.

On the high side, it's a one trip, one stop process, so there's no great expenditure in gas. On the bottom end, they only process permits from eight till noon, one day a week. Permit is good for four years, and my last renewal took me only about thirty minutes.
