Two Pistol Packer on www.ktog.org prefers the Win "White Box" 115 grn. JHPs. This round has done well in his "wetpack" testing and can be had for AFFORDABLE prices at most Wally Worlds. You may have to ask the manager to order it in this weight vs. the 147s since some guns won't reliably cycle the 147's. If you search for it at the afore mentioned forum you will find a copy of my letter to the manager to both my local Wal-Mart (tm) and corporate HQ. He ordered 20,000 of them for me !!

What do others like for AFFORDABLE 9mm JHPs that both penetrate and expand well? S.A.C. likes the Gold Dots but at $1 a round I simply can't afford to practice with them.

THANKS!

I've been buying the Remington 100-packs of JHP (L9mm1B) since the local walmarts quit carrying the 115gr USA stuff. At 20 bux per hundred its cheaper too. Cheap enough for po' folk to use for practice and to verify that your piece and every magazine for it function correctly. I just make sure I have a good stock of one lot number for checkout and carry.

Josh tested some on water jugs a while back. Definitely not premium ammo, but I think quite useable.

Stephen and others like the Federal Classic 115gr but I've never seen it locally. He has wetpack results on his website if you want to look further.

I guess I should have mentioned I don't reload. Maybe someday when I get a good deal on a used press or whatever they're called. But for now it's factory stuff for me.

Since I already bought a box I'm going to try the Speer Gold Dot 124's in my Sigma to see if they will cycle reliably. Then I'm going to try the WWB PP 115's also. As I mentioned, Two Pistol Packer swears by them and it will allow me to practice with my carry round.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Hi again Dave,

Stephen has done a good bit of work with the USA 115gr JHP, comparing it with the Silvertips.

I used the load quite a bit before our local WalMart quit carrying it. I also carried the Silvertip back in the dark ages, before Hydra-Shoks became the 'in' thing.

There's a new manager in that department so I may try to see if they can get them again. In the meantime I'm happy with the 115gr UMC value pack; I suspect the Winchester is a better load but its also 50% more money.

Regards,

Pat

Question for the regulator: I have a source of reasonably priced ammo through a private party who advertised on another website. The ammo is first rate Winchester Ranger LE, the prices are reasonable, he is very good to work with and seems to enjoy the respect of other guys on that site. Am I allowed to divulge this information here for the benefit of these fellows? Not quite sure what the rule is and I'm very careful not to violate one. Thanks. Jer

Howdy Mr. Jerry,

The short answer is yes sir you certainly can. While we prefer to see positive comments about a vendor, we also recognize if there is a problem with one that is also a benefit for members to see as well.

You are simply passing on a positive experience with a vendor you have first hand experience with. So that type of feedback is always welcomed here.

Thanks Twoguns.

Gents, here is a fellow who advertised a quantity of Winchester Ranger LE ammo ranging from 9mm, .40,45, etc. all the way to .223 for pretty reasonable prices. I bought three 50 round boxes of 9mm @ $20 per box, which is half the price of most good self defense loads. His ad is at this address. (If I mess it up and you can't get through, his email address is [email protected], and he is in Florida.)Here goes:

http://AR15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=133&t=481059

You can reserve your purchase via email and he will inform you of the total charge via return email. Send him a money order and he will ship your order the day he receives the money order. My three boxes of 9mm cost $12 UPS, with no other handling charges. He will notify you on the day he ships it.

I know this isn't exactly inexpensive practice ammo, but it sure beats heck out of twenty bucks for twenty rounds of Hydro Shok. Hope this helps.

Dear Folks,

I figured out we've been using different terms here. What we at www.ktog.org call Winchester White Box ( "WWB" ) is what you call the "USA" brand.

The manager of my local Wal-Mart was stocking this in only the 147 grn. weight. I wrote him a nice letter and pointed out that some guns just won't cycle the heavier weight bullet 'cause it's actually slightly bigger. He orderd CASES of the 115 grn. weight for me! I also sent a copy of the letter to Wal-Mart HQ since he told me they are reducing their sporting goods inventory in lots of stores. Ask your manager to stock it for you, it can't hurt to ask. Testing by Two Pistol Packer shows that this round expands much better than the Remington/UMC.

TPP has done quite a bit of "wetpack" testing of 9mm Luger rounds. You will find his work at the ktog site.

The Double Tap brand also uses the Gold Dot bullet but Midway's price for it is HALF what my dealer charges for the same bullet in a Speer cartridge. I figure even with the shipping cost I would save some money.

THANKS to pff for the links.

I think the USA is going to be both my practice and carry round.
