Has any company announced the intention of developing, or has developed a semi automatic pistol in the .17 cal? I understand some kits are on the market, but I am not interested in a kit.

Thanks.

Kimber shows their rimfire 1911 in one of the 17 rimfire chamberings in the catalog, but I have not seen one (haven't looked). I think the 17s use a steel slide rather than the aluminum of the .22s.

Hi whiffelball,

I checked out the site you recommended. Not exactly what I had in mind. I'm more interested in a .17HMR in the 1911 style. However, some writer pointed out that the cartridge length may be too great to be accomodated by the 1911's internal dimensions. Does anyone have any comments on this?

I do own a couple of 1911A1's. Both GM and .45ACP. One a new production series 70 Colt and the other a custom built GM .45ACP series 70 type I did. I'm not especially interested in converting one or the other to the .17HMR by using a kit if one is produced that I like. However, I do understand the cost the company would have for new tooling, etc. if they produced a 1911 type (if possible) in the .17HMR so the kit may be my only choice.

The length is the issue. If you look at the old AMT automag that was chambered in 22mag (same length as 17HMR), the grip is HUGE to accomodate it.
