Hey gt40doc,

I don't blame you for being too leery of downloading anything onto your machine. However, I get no banners or pop-ups here (or, anywhere else). In case you don't know, Josh Smith sold this site to a another person to use it for a "Advertising Platform" and that what pays the bills to keep this site going.... I doubt there is much that the Administrators or Regulators can do to control the functionality of the Ad's displayed here. While annoying, it is still a great place to connect on the subject of "Handguns and Ammunition". I will not post further on this subject folks....

Best,

Chris

Hi Guys,

I didn't authorize anything but have no say-so in it anymore. After Mr. Camp died, I really lost most of the desire I did have to run this place, and so I sold it for a token amount and with the understanding that the board would be moved from a free software board (Proboards) to the existing vBulletin.

I'd wanted vBulletin for you guys, but had been unable to afford it.

Because of the security software I run, I do not see any ads. This software is NoScript, Adblock Edge (a version of the Adblock Plus Mr. Stephens advocates), and Ghostery. The browser I run is Firefox, though I'm currently exploring a Firefox rebuild by Comodo called Ice Dragon.

With the Smith-Sights business, I really do not have the time to be here as often as I would like. This is another reason I let the board go to other hands.

I will, however, check to see if the possibility exists to do away with ads for members who may wish to pay for board upkeep.

Thank you for understanding.

Josh

Are you guys actually getting pop-ups, or just regular ads? I've never seen one pop-up on this forum, but I did notice that there now is a 300x250 square ad after the first post of a page. Pop-ups are those annoying, intrusive ads that "pop-up" in the middle of your screen, and you have to exit out of them in order to view the page.

I'll forward your concerns to those in charge of the advertising, and see if there's anything that can be done. As far as ad-blockers go, I really don't recommend them, here or anywhere. It's a form of 'stealing' in a way, as you're absorbing information from the site you're visiting, and taking away any revenue a site depends on to help cover bills, and keep the site free for use. Without being able to pay for itself, theoretically a site might have to close-up shop. Just something to think about.

I'll keep you all updated..

The three posts above have definitely clarified a lot of questions/concerns for me, and hopefully others. My concern was that they(the ads) had never been there before, and then showed up. I must apologize as I didn't understand all of the financial situations involved concerning this forum. I thought that somehow these ads had gotten into this forum without anyone(Admin) knowing about it. I will most certainly keep my mouth shut from this point forward concerning these ads.

Thank you all for the explanation and the history of the place. I like it here, and hope it continues.
