Changes in Virginia

Recently the AG of Virginia has decided that Virginia will no only honor concealed carry permits from most other states.

I am concerned that this will be come a trend. And certainly other states who are on Virginia's "not good enough" list will stop honoring Virginia's permits. I hope this does not become a cascade of states stopping the reciprocity they have.

I am posting this to alert readers, and to ask if there are rumblings in other states.

The governor of Tennessee yesterday said jokingly that Virginia will soon stop honoring other states' drivers licenses too. Heh

Not wanting to run afoul of the forum's rules against political comments, George, I will merely say that this is being seen in Tennessee as a political measure, not a safety measure, and for that reason along with the NRA's denouncement of it, I believe other states will reject it as a safety measure and shy away from it. I know darn well Tennessee will. Biiiiig IMHO's.

I read about it, but Az has made no comment. As many know, Az does not require a CCW to carry concealed, but many of us do have a CCW.

I was not hoping to ignite a political discussion. I am concerned about the reactions in other states and what it would mean for me when I travel.

Kentucky (my state) is on the new list so will probably avoid Virginia. The other thing that comes to mind is how it affects concealed carry folks in Virginia. Unless Kentucky has changed our laws, Kentucky recognizes out of state concealed carry licenses only from states that recognizes Kentucky's.

Les, that is exactly what concerns me. I don't visit Kentucky often, but would have to be careful if Kentucky withdraws its reciprocity.

Hello JayPee,

Yep! We are madder than heck down here in South Carolina over the VA's AG's announcement! What's worse is that the AG pronounced that we issue CWP's to convicted felons... I won't go to the political "dark side" on this one, but I can assure you that I would get banned from this forum for what I think of this "horse's ass" (and that's being polite!).

I have family that lives in VA. and basically told them the other day that they will have to come visit us here in SC. I will not step foot in VA. ever again.

Chris, it is a sad day. But this is not a political blog, so I will just silently nod in agreement with your things not needed to be said.

It sounds to me like the VA legislators erred when they vested the authority in one lone human regarding reciprocity. Has there been an event or statistic that would trigger a move like this? In other words, did some licensee from another state travel to VA or some other state and make a newsworthy mistake in judgement?
