Stevens 311 information needed

I am in the process of buying a Stevens 311 Series--H ( as it reads on the right sideplate). This SxS has a S/N of B370916. It has very few other markings on it, besides what looks like proofmarks on the top of each barrel. It is a 12 gauge. Can anyone on this forum who is familiar with the 311s tell me when this was made? I think it was 1950, owing to the "B" prefix in the serial number. It wears what I think are 28" bbls. What choke would this be? I appreciate any info.

Yo!

Chokes should be marked. As I recall _most_ with 28" barrels were MOD/FULL but there's no telling if any modifications have been made.

If the choke is important to you, measure it.

No help on dating one.....if I had any references they went downstream in Ivan.

Regards,

Pat

I got my NIB 12 ga M311 for Christmas in about 1958. It is bored improved and modified. I have no info on SNs. It was an economy shotgun, as rugged an anvil, and still works very well.

Stephens 311s made before 1968 usually dont have any serial #

Neither of mine do and one of them was brand new in 1965.

It is possible that some of the higher grade ones do...not sure about a 311-H. Fox Model B's were basically the same gun - I think most of them had serial #s

Model H,s were made in the 1970,s. Pre 1968 had no ser.## numbers just a letter on the rec. in a circle.,( with barrels off between hinge pin and rec.face ). 311a,s made from 1949 are letter A down the alpabet for each year . My 311A is a I which is 1957. The 311H,s were late guns and alot ruffer than the 311A,s from the 50,s and early 60,s. 311a,s are nice guns with thin splinter walnut fore arms and plain walnut buttstocks case colored rec.. Most H,s had hardwood stocks and square forearms.

Going through my notes I have all the data for pre -1968 Stevens Letters A-N 1949 to1961 ,P is 1963 ,R to V 1964 to 1968. Ser.### Numbers after 1968. Love those old simple ,reliable SxS,s. Allso a note of interest Stevens made them for the Big Department stores,Sears&Roebuck,Westernfields,Montgomerywards , etc.

Most 28" barrels on the Stevens 311 were choked modified and full(or to a lesser extent, F & F)....if it has 26" barrels, assume IC & modified.
I had one that I bought back in 1980....killed a truckload of game with it and it was one of my favorite guns. Took it hunting a few years back and had troubles with misfires. Took it to a gunsmith, and was told it had headspace issues and would cost a small fortune to repair.:(
