Another Dog Scenario - What Would You Do?

Hello,

Here is one for you. There will be additional details in followup posts to this scenario but initial impressions will be given first due to the fact that rarely can one see events into the future

Scenario:

You are dropping off a female friend at her mother's house after she got off work on third shift. Your female friend is carrying Sabre pepper spray, a blend of OC agent and military tear gas, but you are not thinking about this at the time. You are tired as well as it's been busy at work/school/play/whatever and you've not had the time you need to sleep.

As is habit, you scan your immediate surroundings before exiting the vehicle and everything seems kosher. After you lock your doors and exit, your female friend heads right for the porch (~20ft) as you continue to scan as something doesn't "feel" right.

You suddenly see a blur of motion and a cat exits the bushes, pursued by a German Shepherd Dog with an obviously injured right forepaw and a blue color with no obvious dog tags attached.

The GSD leaves off the cat and starts toward you, barking a warning bark but not growling. While it has its tail tucked, it is still advancing.

Your female friend panics a bit as she loves animals and knows you carry a gun. She is also concerned about you. Her panic seems to fuel the dog's boldness.

The dog is a surprise but not totally unexpected as the city either does not have a leash law or is a bit lax in enforcing it.

You are carrying your "day off" complement of weaponry and equipment.

What do you do at this point?

I'd follow Joe's suggestion and yell at it. Has always worked for me but once. That time it was a German Shepard as well. He attacked and I managed to stick a Florsheim wing tip into his mouth when I kicked him. Gashed the leather on top of my new shoe.

I wonder what sort of information is out there concerning unarmed physical resistance to a dog attack.

Yelling usually works. Over the years I've cultivated the ability to do an 'alpha grunt' which stops most dogs cold. The ones who ignore it or take issue with your proclamation of superiority are fair game as they WILL attack.

If you don't have an impact weapon and its in range, slug it. Straight on the nose hurts. On the side of the neck _may_ paralyze it. Or not. On a big enough mutt a flat hand jammed into its open mouth and down the throat will gag it and give a second to deploy a weapon.

If its already jumped at your face and is off the ground, catch it sideways (sidestep a half pace and turn), and holding the animal to your chest jump or fall on it in such a manner as to put all your weight on it and as much velocity as possible. It isn't going to do much for a minute or so.

Regards,

Pat

I have ABSOLUTELY ZERO tolerance for aggressive or even seemingly aggressive dogs running around my neighborhood. I have a 19 month old girl and a 6 year old boy, who are frequently in my front yard, supervised of course. I would have shot it and called the cops to let them know the dog charged and I had no choice. I feel that if a dog will stand up to or threaten a full grown man he will probably have his way with an unattended child.

Another Dog Scenario - What Would You Do?

Let me give you exactly what happened to me. And I am a dog owner and lover, have been for years

On my bike about 5 blocks from home a black lab/mix no leash no one with him was attacking a girl with her dog leashed. She was real upset and asked me to help. Having handled a lot of hunting dogs and not being afraid I approached from behind got him by the back of the collar and pulled off.

He started spinning after my leg. So I gave him an airplane spin by his collar slammed the dog to the ground with one knee in his side. He died straight away. Police come up take my name and said don't worry about it.

Week later animal control visited talked to me and started getting aggressive with questions. Turns out someone convinced them to file cruelty charges against me. If the dog was dead someone must have been cruel. Or so this person said. She did not witness the action but passed when the dog was on the ground and police were there.

Went to court unprepared with a lawyer who thought the charges were trumped up and I had no chance of being convicted. We met first in the hall outside the courtroom. Meanwhile the paper got involved with a cameraman and reporter in the court. Slam, guilty and 60 days in jail. The Judge told me I should prepare a proper defense and suggested I get another lawyer

Anyway 3 months latter with expensive legal fees, the girl whose dog was being attacked back in town to testify, expert witnesses fees, and background investigation on the crackpot who asked charges to be filed, the case was dismissed.

Cost me 7 thousand bucks. I suggest letting him bite you first then giving the body slam. That would have totaly turned the situation around. Also avoid using your pistol since my atty said cost would have at least doubled had a firearm been involved.

In the US today animals are gaining a special status over and above what a human criminal has and we need to be real aware of backlash and crackpots who will cause you no end of trouble.

Very good advice to let the dog bite you first and not use a firearm. I carry a fixed blade knife if needed.

Mr Boats, I really feel sorry for you. Here in Texas, when your dog gets loose, your neighbors call you and say that your dog must have accidently gotten loose. The next time, your dog just doesn't come home. The goat ranches around here shoot on site and don't ask questions. I have been attacted by rabid fox which I shot[ good thing I was carrying even tho we didn't have ccw yet] and by deer which I hollered as loud as I could and waved my arms[ even tho I was armed. Two pit bull dogs live enclosed down the road and I wouldn't hesitate for a second if they came after me. I'm sure it's a lot different in other areas of the country. Good luck to all. Bill

Don't be too sure it can't happen anywhere. Animal rights people are on the prowl and looking to cause trouble were ever possible. It's much more advanced in other countries than in the US but these things spread. Not to mention moving from State to state.

Big thing that happened in my case was the newspaper. When they showed up no way the Judge was going to dismiss the case. He did not want to stick his neck out for what was obvious but not pr oven to the absolute. On appeal nobody would have convicted me as the details were so well pr oven. However no paper present at that trial.
