Interesting FTF problem - need ideas...

Hi degatesjr,

I agree with you completely. I already have one Colt Combat Commander that I have put quite a bit of money into, mostly for extras that I wanted rather than needed, and it runs 100% - I would't have it any other way. In fact, I like this gun so much that I am looking at getting this one we are discussing as a spare assuming I can get in running right with a little help from my cyber friends.

In this case, I have talked a guy into selling it to me for a very reasonable price because he doesn't want to deal with the FTF problem and was going to trade it on a Glock. I have never encountered this particular FTF before, but I thought for sure that I would get some good ideas here, which I did, and that it might be a simple fix.

I haven't tried it with anything other than 230 grain loads.

I am sufficiently encouraged by the advice here that I am going to order an Ed Brown slide stop, a few Commander recoil springs from Wolff, and have my gunsmith take a look at the extractor tomorow at lunch. I should have some answers by mid-end of the week!

Thanks,

PGM

I also think its a magazine issue. I've seen the last round actually slide too far forward allowing the slide to pick up too much momentum, it become nearly impossible for the case to feed under the extractor to feed properly. JMB designed the 1911 platform with a five inch barrel, the shoretr the slide/barrel combination, the harder its is to ensure 100% feeding. At one time there was a magazine from MAG-Pack that actually addressed the last round feed issue.

Well gents,

I changed out the slide stop as we discussed. Also, my gunsmith saw something he didn't like with the extractor and took it out and hit it with a small file in a few places.

After these two operations, we test fired it with the Wilson and McCormick mags and the problem did not re-appear. I am optimistic that the problem is solved (more extensive testing is required) but I believe I go ahead and purchase the gun. If I really get ambitious I will put the old slide stop back in and find out whether this or the extractor was the problem!

Thanks to all who provided ideas.

Fixing 1911 problems without handling the gun is very hard to do and I am not surprised we did not get it right. We talked about the obvious and I still don't see what the slide stop issue was. I do not use Colt Slide stops as they tend to be marginal and the only ones I used to use were the >38 Super/9mm slide stops. They also tend to breat at the most inconvienent times!

I am glad you got it fixed.

Captaineagle,

I agree. I don't see how the slide stop issue is related to the FTF, and I only suggested replacing the stop because of a problem I'd encountered---in a Colt .38 Super, go figure. Every gun has its own quirks.

David

PS---And congratulations, Mr. Sample, on your latest magazine piece for building a custom 1911. Excellent photographs, too. (This is off-thread, but I don't where else to post it.)

Captain and David,

I am grateful for the suggestions as it was a learning experience for me. I don't look at it as anybody "got it wrong" or "got it right," just that I went looking for solid advice and got it in spades from guys who know what they are talking about. Unless I get around to putting the old Colt slide stop back in, I will not know whether it was that or the extractor adjustment that was the issue.

In any event, onward we go. As a class, these 1911s do seem to have more "quirks" than some other guns, I will say that.

Thanks! This is the only gun forum with decent folks on it and I really like the way you guys behave!

I wanted to give the readers an overview on how the Online GSP EX 1911 Class went and I think they did a good job of editing.

I am NOT a gunwriter but I had fun doing this one.

I also have wriiten articles for SHOOT! Magazine from time to time.

I do it pro bono. I don't do things for money. I am retired!

What subjects did you write about?

That's the only way to do it, as far as I'm concerned. Trying to make a living as a gun writer would take most of the fun out of it.

I wrote a three part article about how I do my Pistolero Single Action Tune Ups on the gun that turned into the Johhny Mack Brown Rafle Gun.

I also wrote up a match in Raton NM, and I do a column called Cowboy Smithin'.
