Pistol Won't Rust

Hi All,

A while back I neglected my pistol and found a bit of surface rust on it. I cleaned it up and oiled it.

I've been neglecting it again. It's probably had its last thorough cleaning about 6mos ago.

Thing is, I don't wipe it down, I leave it in leather, and carry it daily, and it's stopped rusting.

I oil it when it's too hot to touch. Think this has anything to do with it? I'm confused. My long guns seem to rust, with much less use.

Thanks,

Josh <><

Some companies such as Militec-1 claim "MILITEC-1 Synthetic Metal Conditioner has the unique ability to create a complex, molecular compound within the surface of heated gunmetal. This causes MILITEC-1 to become part of the metal, not merely a temporary coating or a boundary film". If this statement is true, my guess is that is at least one of the reasons why your pistol is not rusting assuming you are using Militec or a similar oil.

I have no guess on your long guns unless you use a different type oil and/or do not heat.

Hi Josh,

Yes it is possible to impregnate the pores of the metal with oil when you oil while hot thereby slowing down the oxidation process in the metal.

I now use militec on all of my firearms and have conditioned some by baking the oil into the metal using a toaster oven @ 150 degrees for 15 minutes. It does help retard the frictional wear of the moving parts as I have tried cold bluing the parts prior to this process and checking for wear after shooting.

On the other hand, I use Flitz Polish on my long guns as they are apt to see less use and need a greater degree of protection from the elements when they are used. If you keep long guns cased, they need more attention than the average owner thinks because of changes in household humidity can lead to surface oxidation.

carolinaman man, I became aware of Flitz Polish a week or so ago, and purchased some only a couple of days ago. Does it indeed slow down the oxidation process in metal as you imply in the above post? I know the stuff polishes better than anything I have ever seem, and if it helps prevent rust, that certainly will be a big bonus.

Hi there Keller,

I have used it for a number of years and it does work. It leaves a protective wax-like coating on the metal sealing it from moisture.

Thanks guys. I use regular ol' Remoil. I suppose it's probably just impregnated it like Carolina said.

One sure way to stop rust from forming on your firearms is to have the coated with a moly finish like Gun-Kote.
