I need help--should I trade?

A friend of mine bought this gun a couple of years ago, then two days later he saw my 4" S&W M24-3 and just HAD to have it. I put a C&S extended safety on the BHP, removed the magazine disconnector, added a heavy trigger return spring, added some Spegels, and now I have a really nice plinker.

The problem is, he found ANOTHER one just like it. It had been toted some, so the finish was kind of messed up, and something had gone wrong with the thumb safety, which didn't work. As a Christmas present I bought a thumb safety here on the forum and put it in for him. He then took the gun up to Walter Birdsong's and got it Black T'd. That is one PURTY Browning.

The "problem" is that I have a 4" nickelled M57-0 that he has coveted for quite some time. While shooting at the range today, he brought up his Browning and my S&W and informed me that the Browning could be very comfortable in my safe, along with the new Mec Gar mags he bought for it.

Financially speaking, if I trade him straight across, which is what he proposes, I'll be basically making a profit of $250 or more, similar to the amount I made on the M24. I feel bad about this, but he does know what I have in the 57, so... what should I do?

A guy can't have too many P-35's..... IF your friend simply must have the M57, knowing that he is coming out short monitarily, I'd trade. Good luck.

Leland,

Tough choice.

Since it is only paper profit you are playing with (unless you intend to sell the BHP) I would be tempted to take the opposite viewpoint as huntershooter...you can still buy a factory new BHP today, not so with the classic Model 57. The old Smiths may someday be worth quite a bit more than they are today.

Good luck in any event, let us know you what you do.

Hiya Leland,

"profit' is relative. You may be making 250 on paper but how long ago did you get the 57?

Sounds closer to even to me, figuring current values.

Regards,

Pat

lelandray and all,

Tough decision. I'd go for another Hi-Power!

On the other hand I already have two Hi-Powers AND a S&W M57-0 4"...

Leland,

If your friend wants the trade... and you prefer the Browning, the choice should be easy. Look, your a good guy, and he is a good friend. I have no doubt you both will do what is good for the both of you.

I say go for the Browning. Generally, I'm one to favor HiPowers over revolvers, but if the revolver is special, I won't let it go.

I am lucky enough to own several of each, revolvers and HiPowers. Of my last four purchases, three have been HiPowers. They are a weakness of mine.

Let us know what you decide. That Browning sure looks nice.

Guys like your friend are called 'gun sluts' in the firearms trade because they fall for any 'pretty face' they see. They are considered stupid and often are taken advantage of by gun shop employees. They are a gun shop owners 'best friend' and a boost to their profit margin.

The crux of this is I wouldn't be too concerned about making a deal with him that is in your favour. Someone else will even if you don't because he WANTS to deal.

Actually, he's one of the shrewdest collectors / accumlators I know. In fact, he very seldom over pays for anything. But I had a very pretty M57 that he's wanted since the first day I brought it home. But we've known each other for a very long time, and I did offer him first refusal on the 57 as soon as we came to some sort of amicable swap. He's gotten the best of me a few times, but then we're very close friends, so there's no animosity.

The deal was completed about half an hour ago. I now have another BHP and five more Mec Gar mags with Black T finish.

Leland,

Congratulations on the new BHP.

Thanks for letting us "in" on this trade. How about a picture someday?
