Problem w/ Argentine HP

I have an Argentine Hi Power that I got from SOG a few years back that has started causing problems. When it's clean, it fires fine. But, after only 60 or so rounds, it will lock up tight!!! I mean so tight I have to use a block of wood and mallet to get the slide to move. I think what is happening is the locking lugs in the slide are worn out and the pistol is seizing up as the slide travels rearward.

Is my only option a replacement slide? Sarco has new Argentine slides for $125, which is the best price I've seen. I thought about the "detective" slide, but I hate to pay that kind of money when I have a good barrel still.

What do you guys think, I know it's tough to diagnose w/out seeing it, but does the problem at least sound familiar?

How about sticky firing pin? When the firing pin sticked at forward position it will lock againt the primmer and interfere the barrel tilting causing slide locked in the position. I had firing pin stuck in the primer when I practiced dryfire repeatly and firing pin pierced thru the primer and slide would not open at all.

What are you lubing it with after cleaning?

I don't think it's the firing pin. When the gun is jammed, the slide is open with about 1/4" of the case showing. I've taken a small screw driver and pushed around on the case, which moves back and forth freely.

I'm lubing it with CLP. Should I be using something else?

Thanks for the suggestions, please keep them coming. This pistol is driving me crazy!

i have an Arcus, which is a BHP clone, it has tight lug fit and does not like dry at all. When the lub dry out it would give me short cycles. I lub the locking lugs and cam with light grease and it runs smoothly ever since. Do the lug edges feel sharp or dull? Can you cycle (with or without ammo) by hand OK? Can use some clue.

The pistol cycles by hand with and without ammo fine. The edges of the locking lugs in the slide do appear to be a bit rounded off, but I always thought the barrel locking lugs were supposed to wear out first.

I've tried dropping the barrel from my German Occupation Hi Power into the Argentine slide, lockup doesn't seem to be much better. Does anyone make a part similiar to the Dwyer Group Gripper for 1911? If it had a little more upward force on the barrel, it may help out. I've already replaced the mainspring with a new 32 lb spring and the recoil spring with a 18 lb.

Hi Bryan45,

It is really difficult to diagnose functioning problems without seeing a picture of the interior of the slide and the exterior of the barrel. Are the slide locking lugs wearing evenly? Or, is there more wear on the rear locking lug?
