Types of ambi safeties

Hi folks,,

So, I recently picked up a BHP with a single-side small safety. Only problem is that I'm a southpaw, so I need to fit an ambi to the gun.

I know about the factory ambis, and I know about the C&S ambis, but I recall having seen a couple of Hi-Powers with very small ambi safeties, and I was wondering if anyone knew what they were and whether they were still in production.

The safeties I'm remembering were blued, and appeared to be about the same size as the single-side "classic" safety. If I recall correctly, they had a 90

Erich,

Trust me Mate, the last thing you want is a small safety. Small safeties are okay for "RANGE ONLY" guns, but little else.

There are some ambi's similar to the C&S that look what like you discribed, but the thumb rest is not as small as it may have appeared to you. I thnk Bushmaster makes, or at least sells/sold them. The big problem with them is that the two halves join with a tongue and groove arrangement in the middle - inside the hammer. They need fitting and get loose (read sloppy) very quickly.

Go with the factory ambi. You'll be happy with it.

Well, I just really don't like the look or feel of the factory ambi, but took your advice re: the small safeties and I went ahead and got a C&S ambi from Midway just a couple of minutes ago. That ought to do me just fine. I also picked up an 18.5-lb recoil spring (if it's recommended by Mr. Camp, that's good enough for me) and a +10% Wolff mag spring for the single 13-rounder that came with my used gun (I have several other mags rushing my way from CDNN as I type this).

So, it looks like I'm set! Many thanks!

Erich,

I've had a Cylinder & Slide ambi safety on my custom BHP for over a decade. Pistol has been used A LOT and it's still as tight as the day it was installed.

From what I've seen Bill Laughridge and his crew do top notch work and have developed some fine products.

I can recommend them without reservation.

This model does is not joined in the middle, but is pinned through the right side "paddle". Very sturdy.

Wes

Wes, you make me feel good about my decision! :) Thanks!

I hope that I'll be able to self-install the C&S safety, armed with Mr. Camp's disassembly guide. I trust that ought to do it.
