This is something that he wanted and he's done it on his own without having to be poked and prodded by us. After the ceremony his recruiter told us that when he first met Marcus several months ago there were many kids in the group and Marcus is the only one to have followed through. He graduates from high school this May and he doesn't feel ready for college just yet. He wants to get out of Idaho and see some of the world and earn his own keep. HE figures the Coast Guard is the way to do it. As I said we're very proud of him.
Congratulations to your son Marcus going in the Coast Guard, checkman.
It will do him good, for your son to get out and see the world a little.
Did your son test for a rate yet? I did the same joined the Navy to travel.
Ended up meeting a island girl, and getting merried and 21 years later retired. Be careful of those Island girls!!
Tell him for me thank you for your service!

Congratulations to your son also checkman. I rode it out 19 years in the Navy Reserves brown water side (IBU, SBU and NCW) after a 4yr active duty Marine Corps hitch. I was considered a cross dresser? Worked twice in my reserve career with Port Security Unit (PSU) Coast Guard overseas which I fully enjoyed. Good group of people. I wish your son the best.

No rating yet, but he's leaning towards something in aviation. Exactly what in aviation he isn't sure about yet.

I was a basic Fireman and was able to choose which rate i wanted to work in.
On the job training. Took the rating exam and became i Interior Communication Electrician, (Telephone man), also worked on fire, flooding an smoke alarms.
Your son will do fine Checkman, good rates in Avaition.

Maybe a Rescue Swimmer?

We see the US Coast Guard all of the time during the summer months down here on the Atlantic Shore. We average about 4 drownings a season over the past 20 years since I have lived here.

One thing that I hate seeing is the HH-61 Dolphin flying low over the surf line is because I know another "tourist" has lost their life to the coastal rip currents down here. Its actually a sad sight that most folks don't know while visiting here is what is going on.

The ocean is a very unforgiving creature at times.

Best,

Chris

Yes. We see it the same out here in the Islands also, on the north shore at winter, Big wave time.

Congrats! A close buddy is in the navy and I respect any family that goes into the line of service. Thank you for all you and your son do.
