Carry Caliber Poll

I peeked in on a poll being taken over at another largely-handgun forum and found the results to be quite interesting, certainly not what I would have imagined. The poll asked respondents to vote on which caliber they carry most. Here are the results.

.32
1 (1.9%)

.38 special
3 (5.8%)

.380 acp
6 (11.5%)

9 mm
33 (63.5%)

.357 SIG
1 (1.9%)

.357 Magnum
0 (0%)

.40 S&W
4 (7.7%)

.45 acp
3 (5.8%)

10 mm
1 (1.9%)

Other (Please specify)
0 (0%)

Total Members Voted: 52

I was very surprised that the .380 didn't rank higher, given all the press it's getting and the number of new guns being made for it, plus everyone on the internet seems to be talking about carrying one. I suspect it would have ranked higher if wives had been included in the poll, as would the .38 Special, given the number of snubbies being bought these days for wives. Anyway, this is what folks on other forums are doing, FWIW.

I'm surprised there weren't more 45 ACP being carried but I base that more on what shows up at IDPA matches. Depending on which match I'm at, it can be as high as around 15 to 20%.

I agree about the 380. The round has been getting a lot of press the last several years and there are plenty of semi autos out there being made for it. As a little side note to that, every now and then somebody asks me if a 380 is legal in IDPA (I'm a IDPA safety officer so I'm "supposed" to know!). The short answer is no they are not allowed.

JayPee,

Found your poll interesting and was amazed the .45 didn't rank higher. It's what I carry, though that's not germane to the subject.

That said I agree with Steven Camp that placement is everything, but am in the bigger is better camp(no pun intended) myself.

I'd bet that we would find a lot more .45's if this group was canvased. Not that I'm uncomfortable with the 9mm, I just believe the .45 may give a "slight" edge.

Thanks for the info...

Wes

I think you're right, Wes. Also I tend to think the .40 and .45 have somewhat fallen victim to outrageous ammo prices in those calibers, especially among new pistoleros. I believe the 9mm will continue to take sales away from both larger calibers so long as its proponents continue to laud the improvements in bullet technology and therefore its effectiveness. And so long as really light, handy guns are made in that caliber and until some serious inroads into more affordable .40/.45 ammo are made. But whaddaIknow?

I admit that my favorite concealed carry guns are 9mm. Because they are smaller, lighter and flatter than an equivalent capacity 45 ACP. And I have come to dislike 40 S&W as a round.

If I am going to open carry, then I'd go with a 1911 in 45 ACP or 38 Super. Or maybe a Sig P226 for the extra capacity.

The folks being polled and the folks responding may say a great deal about the numbers. Most polls I just skip because many are poorly designed. I would have responded .38 super in that one.

I would be hard pressed to pick ammo prices as a factor for carry choice. Folks like those here carry what they have confidence in and may do a large portion of their practice with some less pricey ammunition.

The caliber choices may have more to do with gun prices and gun size in that poll. We just do not know. The 10mm guy is the real head scratcher in that cross section of respondents.

I'm in the 9mm camp these days due to arthritis, except for work where I have to use the .40 S&W. I don't think there's any real advantage in performance these days, but I do miss the .45 on my hip.

Like I said, whaddaIknow? The .40 is my all time favorite, but, like Trooper, ol' Arthur makes me use the 9mm.

For me it is not the round, but the holster. I have not found a concealed holster that I like nearly as much as a modern replica of the old Army under the arm strap around the chest holster. If I could find that model holster for a BHP, I would carry it, or for a Sig 229, etc. But so far the only weapon I have found fits in that holster is the 1911

90% of the time I have a 9mm P-35 or .45 ACP 1911 (Commander) on my person.
8% it's a .38 Super (1911) or .38 Special (S&W "K" frame).
The remaining 2% would be a caliber .4X in a S&W "N" frame.
