.38 Spec Snub Ammo Test: DPX vs Gold Dot vs LSWCHP

Hello. I was able to do some informal tests comparing the "old technology" 158-gr. LSWCHP +P to Corbon's 110-gr. DPX +P as well as Speer's 135-gr. GDHP +P.

Accuracy testing was done at 10 yards. All firing was done with my usual "24/7 gun", a well-used S&W Model 642.

The worst group shot was with Remington's 158-gr. LSWCHP +P. The fact that it was the worst could also be because it was first! Frankly, all three loads grouped very well and I believe that at this range they were all probably capable of much, much tighter groups than I shot.

The best group of the day was fired with Speer's 135-gr. GDHP +P.

Average velocities were based on 10 shots fired 10' from the chronograph screens. Here are the results:

Corbon 110-gr. DPX +P: 1164 ft/sec

Speer 135-gr. GDHP +P: 921 ft/sec

Rem 158-gr. LSWCHP +P: 844 ft/sec

Fired into super-saturated newsprint which had soaked for 24 hours and been drained 30 minutes before shooting, the following penetration depths were recorded. Each is the average penetration based on 5 shots.

Corbon 110-gr. DPX +P: 8"

Speer 135-gr. GDHP +P: 7 1/2"

Remington 158-gr. LSWCHP +P: 8 1/2"

All expanded consistently and there was very little difference in penetration depths shot-to-shot with each load.

Best.

Great article as usual, Mr. Camp.

What I continue to learn from tests such as these is that many loads are very similar in effect. Therefore, once armed with a "good" load, it's still the placement that makes the difference.

I'll stick with the 158 LSWCHP as my carry load in both the S&W M 49 and M67, though I was a little surprised that this load had the greatest penetration.

Regards,

Steve

By the way, you've cost me money again. I've bought a E. German Makarov. Next year, I'm claiming you as a dependent on my taxes!

Hello. Hahahahahaha! Man, I understand that some shooters' wives reportedly have a bounty on me! On a serious note, I don't get too hung up on penetration tests in homogeneous media ,be it gelatin, water, or wetpack. Living creatures are not so built and despite protestations otherwise, in actual living game animals I've seen VERY different results with the same ammunition, depending on what organs and/or bones got smacked. Essentially what I was trying to say between the lines was: The 158-gr has a "street history" that has not been bad and no complaints that I've ever found concerning shallow penetration. As the other two loads pretty closely mimicked its penetration, I THINK that we won't have to be concerned with superficial surface wounds.

Best.

Great test, Stephen. Thanks much for your excellent report, pictures always clarify any doubts.

In view of the fact that you drain your wetpacks and still got 8" penetration (by my conversion, equivalent to 12"gelatin) with DPX, along with the excellent expansion, there is no doubt that DPX is a winner.

Mr. Camp, thanks for doing the test and posting the results on your site and in the forum here. Very informative.

I'd been stoking a Ruger SP101 with the Rem. 158gr. +P and my S&W 638 with the Speer 135gr. +P.

Again, thanks. What's next on the test agenda, if one may ask?

Hello. Well, perhaps some .38 Super DPX or .45 Colt DPX.

Best.

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for the educational article and test. I am really impressed with the accuracy results of your test!

I am very suprised that the Remington LSWC+P runs head to head with the Golddot on your penetration test.

Perhaps there is still something to be said for existing loads out there.

Your test reinforces my confidence with my S&W 642-2 and that I am well armed with any of the loads tested.

Somewhere the above should be inscribed in stone!

Mr. Camp after reading all your information on snubs I am going to carry "158 grain swchp" instead of lighter loads in my model 36 s&w. as you do!..........8080 (new member)
