DoubleTap380 v.s. Ranger v.s etc.

This is a partial report on my test of the new 380 DoubleTap ammo. A friend sent me a box of Winchester Ranger RA380T (LEO ammo) so I included that in the test along with Win S380 SXT (plain Personal Protection ammo, black box) some Speer GoldDot, Rem GoldenSabr, a round of DPX, and FMJ, that I use for "calibration". My test was using a Bersa 380CC pistol, 3.5" barrel.

The full report with ammo pictures, accuracy test, wetpack box picture, was originally posted at the USRange site, link.....

http://usrange.org/smf/index.php?topic=1707.0

if anybody wants to see it. Partial report here due to I have trouble posting photobucket pictures here so only one picture shown of the wetpack results.

The wetpack was soaked with the paper loose in a tub for 40 hours. Soaking less than 24 hours or with the paper tied or taped usually gives poor penetration results that do not correlate with the 2/3 rule we established 4 years ago. So you will note my penetration results are better than reported by others. The picture shows the recovered bullets and results are as follows....

Rem GoldenSaber 102gr JHP went 8" and 8+" with .644" and .617" expansion.

Speer GoldDot 90gr JHP both went 8+" with .526" and .541" expansion.

Winchester SXT 95gr JHP both went 8+" with .605" and .550" expansion. Bullet petals open normally with no talons.

CorBon DPX 80gr copper JHP went 7" with .656" expansion.

Winchester Ranger (LEO ammo) 95gr JHP went 7" one and 8" other with .654" and .648" expansion. Sharp talons on petals.

Double Tap 90gr (GD bullet) JHP both went 8+" with .533" and .543" expansion. Nice star shaped bullet some petals torn off.

Rem UMC 95gr FMJ went the full 12" with no expansion, as it should in a good wetpack.

Then with the Chrony, here are the velocity readings. Do your own average if you want to but as far as I'm concerned, factory ammo is not very uniform.....at least you can see the range.......

Rem GS.......886.2....843.2.....933.0 fps

SpeerGD......910.8....953.4.....919.1......956.6 fps

Win SXT.......856.5....956.7.....823.5......856.9 fps

CB DPX........1030.....1047 fps

Win Rang......906.8....937.0....904.7......916.7 fps

DoubTap........1042....1017.....1067.......1022 fps

Rem UMC.....878.4....935.5....1010.......887.2 fps

The lot number for the DoubleTap I used is 1512. I had no malfunctions of anykind with the DoubleTap ammo. Of course I only fired about 10 rounds out of the box for the test, so I will do more tests later to confirm that the ammo is good. Weather was just too hot to shoot more that day.

I had no malfunctions with any of the other ammo, except the plain Win SXT S380 rounds which gave several FTF's. This I blame on the different shape of the bullet nose compared the the Ranger RA380T ammo. My full report at the USR link shows pictures of the difference for anyone interested.

So far, the DoubleTap 380 looks like good ammo. I also note that Midway will soon carry it so don't have to order from the factory.

Cheers,

og

Howdy Mr. OG,

Thanks for your usual great report sir. I will print this one out and give it to my shooting buddy Mr. John, as he sometimes carries a Walther PPK/S as a back-up weapon. He is often asking me for ammo recommendations on .380 acp ammo, and I just go back to your posts and give him the results (tips my hat).

He will appreciate this one as well sir.

If he can get the Ranger LEO ammo it is good. Some online shops sell it now direct to anyone but don't have a link for you. Somebody here will have a link.

I do not recommend the plain Win SXT black box code S380 and it is hard to find anyway and only comes in 20 rounds.

He can order a box of DoubleTap 380 direct from factory at this link, I think, is where I got mine....

It is a 50 rounds box so enough to practice and still have some to keep, if he likes it.

My favorite 380 ammo is still the Remington GoldenSabr 102gr JHP.

Hi OG,

Thank you. Right now I'm carrying hardball flatnose in my PPK clone; I may have to switch.

Hi OG. As usual, another excellent test. I also was intrigued by the new Double-Tap .380 Gold Dot HP, and tested it against the Speer GDHP (results posted here and at KTOG). Your results are consistent with my own, in that both rounds perform nearly identically in both penetration and expansion. I appreciate seeing the different velocities in your test, and was frankly expecting greater penetration with the hot DT load. I've always liked the Gold Dot bullet, and I think the Double-Tap is the way to go vs. the Speer, in that you get more ammo at a cheaper price. I've never had the good results you've had with the Golden Sabers, but I may have to try them again. As for the DPX, my tests have always shown superior expansion, as does your current test; however, I've also found superior penetration compared to other rounds. Too many variables, I guess.

I just bought a box of the new Fiocchi 90g. HP, which is topped with the Hornady XTP bullet, and plan to do a wetpack test comparing it to the DPX and DTGD. I'll post the results when I'm done. All the best, DT Willy

hi, DT,

sure is a lot of new ammo showing up these days. I'm just too old to do much with it anymore. I'm glad to see more folks doing some of the tests now, like Josh with his water jugs. All our tests really provide is a little info on whether the bullet will expand or not and maybe how well it penetrates. The rest is up to the individual making sure what he/she chooses will function every time in their handgun. And then practicing enough to hit the target.

Like a famous stopping power writer says..."gelatin ain't people". And neither is wet paper.

The best thing you and I get out of it are some neat souvenirs and the fun.

Another thing everybody should get is a chronograph of some kind. The Shooting Chrony brand is often on sale for less than $100. This to me is just as much fun as wetpacks, and is sure a lot less trouble and no where near as messy!

Cheers and keep up the good work.

OG,

Great work as usual, thanks for putting together the study. There are enough of us out there that rely on the 380 from time to time that this is quite valuable to many. Your attention to detail and insight is most commendable.

PGM, thank you sir for your kind comments. Actually, using DoubleTap for the test was a kinda add-on. After some discussions about the Winchester Ranger ammo, a friend on another site sent me a box to try. I then ordered a box of the plain Win SXT from the only place I could find any...Ammo Direct. About the same time word came out that DoubleTap 380 was available so I ordered a box of that too. So the intial object was to test the Ranger ammo but the DoubleTap just made it a much better test comparison of 380 ammo. DoubleTap is a good price and other calibers are available. Everyone should try some.
