Winchester White Box? Please be More Specific!

As I've said before, I carry second-tier ammo as a preference as it allows me to test several guns and ALL the magazines with enough rounds to assure function. Most recent check was with a number of new magazines for the HP's. 100-150 rounds per mag adds up bloody fast, especially when they can be used in any of several guns. The latest HP won't get carried but it got checked out with 250 JHP nonetheless. The JHP I carry (LM9MM1B) is only a couple cents per shot more than really cheap ball bulk packs, so in my carry guns its basically all I shoot, plinking, practice or carry. I get warm fuzzies knowing it works, and every session increases the round count with my carry load.

Those that can afford 2000 rounds of buck-a-pop premium ammo should use it. I can't.

Back in the bad old days we used to buy one box of Silvertips, shoot half of them to get a rough idea where they hit, load the rest in the two magazines you owned and hope for the best. I have no intention of going back to that if I can help it.

Regards,

Pat

Winchester White Box? Please be More Specific!

I went to pick up a case (500) rounds of the REM-UMC bulk ammo at Dick's Sporting Goods yesterday. While they continue to advertise a sale on it, it is in very short supply so I have had to rain check it. I note the price has risen steadily ($6/50 to $10/50 in about a year) but it is about as cheap a 9mm ball as I can find. The stock number is L9MM3 and it is labeled 9mm Luger 115 MC. I use this ammo in IDPA competition and shoot about that much every six weeks. I also use the 45 and 38 calibers of this ammo as well when I am shooting those calibers.

I will shoot my own reloads in practice (when I actually do that) but not in my plastic framed guns. I have seen too many cases of dynamic disassembly to do that.

Carry ammo is a horse of a different mustache. Other than 45 ACP (in which I do not generally use JHPs), I like +P or +P+ law enforcement premium ammo. Endorsement by NYPD or the FBI or my own police are important to me. I generally buy a couple of hundred and test some, then lay aside a quantity for rotation. I like to shoot it up about twice a year.

All ammo has gotten both scare and expensive recently. My usual retail sources are erratic with regard to stock and at the shows, forget it!

I'm curious as to how Winchester decides which ammo goes in the 100 rd. Value Packs and which in the 50 round boxes? Is there a QC step where less consistent ammo is routed off the line into 100 round packaging?
Do Rem-UMC and Federal discriminate as well with their value packs?
Has anyone noticed differences between UMC and Magtech's 250 round packaging as opposed to the 50 round boxes?

My expectation would be there is no difference at all, that is to say all the white box comes of the same production line. The finished ammo is simply packaged in whatever size container they at that time.

FWIW

That's what I initially thought but the OP states there is a difference between the 50 rd. and 100 rd. boxes. I was wondering exactly how the "cut" is made?
I've set aside a few 100 rd. boxes against future shortages but if they are inferior rounds I'll burn 'em on the range, save the brass and replace them with 50 rd. boxes.

WWB is definitely not all the same thing, but I don't think the box has anything to do with it... consider...

On several occasions Winchester has contracted WWB ammo out to overseas makers... S&B has made ammo for Winchester as has Privi... I have heard people say some WWB was made by Fiocchi as well. The clues to it are somewhat obscure, but there if you look for them.... as an example, the S&B made ammo, came in 50 round boxes, but the plastic tray inside was two piece and the same design as S&B. Reading the box information closely shows it is similar to S&B ammo. I was able to identify both 9x19mm and 45acp WWB made by S&B. I was also able to find some that apparently was made by Privi.

Why Winchester used foreign contractors has never been explained, but presumably because the Winchester factory could not meet demand.

Whilst I re-load most of my ammo, I have used some WWB and found it worked fairly well... got a dud once in a while, but otherwise ok. I bought a couple of cases for a Thunder Ranch course a few years ago... probably half the others at the course were using WWB in either 9x19mm, 40SAW or 45acp. Some used 100 round boxes some 50 round... I don't recall any difference in the ammo I shot, and don't recall noticing any other differences... with others either...

I wonder what Winchester would say if asked the difference?

I know that IMI has made Winchester 5.56/.223 ammo in the past. I have shot a few boxes of WWB 45ACP that was so dirty that the muzzle and interior of the stainless steel gun was black with soot, which was the exception to the experience I've had with most WWB, so I'm sure some other manufacturer made that lot.

So 11 years have passed since this thread started.
What is the consensus opinion of WWB and WWB Value Packs these days---especially after the last ammo shortage?
Has anything changed for better or worse?
