A Review: Colt's 21st Century Commander

Nice gun and nice review.

I like it.

Like you, I would still probably change a thing or two (like to a trigger that was identical except for being aluminum) but that's nothing. The hard things are done, and not overdone. I like the hammer for Commander tradition and am glad they resisted using an oval hammer. It looks like Colt still likes to show their machining talent by leaving the edges squared and sharp, but I'd rather they were left that way so they could be smoothed a little, than over-rounded by getting carried away.

If I needed yet another 1911, I'd look for one of those. I might look anyway.

Barry,

I forgot to not that while the edges look sharp they are not, but seem to be "broken". Hardly enough to notice, but they are not the razor sharp edges we've come to expect. They did a nice job on this one.

A Review: Colt's 21st Century Commander

Wes:

Great report and it is good to see Colts back in the game as it were. I was sort of surprised to see the return to the small thumb safety as that appears to predate both my Mk IV S 70 guns. I always found those triangle shaped safety's to be functional.

I was glad to hear that they have blunted the edges a bit. I never found that to be an issue with GI firearms most of which predated me by five or six years but on both my original Colt 1911s (a CDR and a GM), the edges would cut you LDC (long, deep and continuously). Back then, no one wanted a broken edge.

That is quite a price tag! However, prices on all of them keep creeping up and up. Thanks again!

Nice write up Wes. I'm glad to see Colt making a come back in the 1911 carry market. I wish them the best.

Hello Wes,

Excellent report! Man, thank you for sharing the report and pics of your new commander! It really sounds like it will be a "keeper" for sure and like you I am not "crazy" about the forward cocking serrations on the slide!

Please keep us updated and let us know what kind of leather you are going to carry your newest in! (I know that it is a 21st Century Commander, but you are not going to use Kydex!) LOL!!!!

Best and thanks again,

Chris

A Review: Colt's 21st Century Commander

Good report Sir:

I believe the trigger and safety lock may be one's impressions of what is good on a 1911. We all have preferences and those preferences differ.

I would change the trigger and safety lock just to make the gun a bit more ... me, but it is clear that the gun is GTG as is.

Thanks for the report.

I have always loved Colts.... even when they were not as good as this new model.

I prefer a steel frame and a full length five-inch gun, but that looks like a nicely made piece. Congrats and thanks for the write up.
