Turkey Shotgun!!!!!

Heres my favorite Turkey gun a 28" Stevens 311A 16 ga. made in 1957 for Sears&Roebuck J.C.Higgins. A Classic American Doublegun.

Very nice. I got my first turkey a few years back with a "loaner" Browning A5 12 Ga. That Tom never new what hit him...

It's interesting that once you've eaten a wild bird the store bought variety tastes like saw dust.

I still don't have a dedicated turkey set up. I retire in a couple years and may remedy that.

I built one years ago. It began life as an H&R 'Topper' slug gun, 24" cyl bore with sights. Added a Tru-Choke with tubes.

Original intent was a lightweight 'loafing' gun that could do small game plus serve for deer in the thickets. My pard has dumped a turkey every year for decades with it with one shot, never failing to complain about the recoil. It weighs about 5 lbs.

The concept became rather popular locally for a while.

I have tryed all kinds of shotguns for turkey. Even a browning BPS 10mag which was super heavy kicked like a mule 20 something years ago. I even loaded the shells and killed 14 turkey with it. But I found that killing turkey on head shots 12yds to 40 yds its not needed. And long range blasting beyond that is not needed. I went back to to the basics where I started. The 16ga.hi-brass 6shot and the 870 with the 5-6shot ww2-3/4" short magnums or reloads. And I found super tight chokes are not needed. I have tryed in 12ga .660,.665,.680,.690. I like the .690 in the 870. Anymore I,m getting lazy about loading turkey loads. Back in the day Ballistic Products stuff was used to reload turkey loads, special wads, buffer, nickel&copper shot ,blue dot powder. But today factory loads are very good. I allways liked a 28"-30" barrel for complete powder burn and just plain bb front site. No scopes,red-dots,fibers or iron sites. Plain dull shotguns with wood or matt black plastic stock. My walnut stocks are de-shined with oooo steel woold and oiled with satin Tung -Oil. I pattern what load I use and test it on paper every shotgun I used. Even black powder shotguns. I did buy a Super neat Ithaca 3" 12ga. Turkey Slayer 10 years ago ,ported, camo, syn.stock, rifle sites, screw in chokes. At that time I took my 12year old out on youth season the weekend before adult season. We called in a nice Tom after about 1.5 hours and My son Jeremy harvested him! 21.5lb,1-3/8" spurs,10-3/4 beard. So I gave him the shotgun. He would not give it back anyway!!!!! I did change out the factory .665 choke and put in a Carlsons extended .690. Thanks for the interest!!! P.S. keep that head down on that stock or you will shoot high over there head!
