Colt Police Positive .38

A lost hunting buddy has willed this piece to me. I've looked at some sites on history but interested in any more info someone might have. Not interested in selling.
Colt Police Positive .38. s/n 2893 Smooth rail and trigger. Near mint condition.
It looks like the Colt site show's this as 1906-1907? Can anybody confirm?
Not sure what ammo this actually takes? Short Colt, S&W?
Probably won't ever shoot, but would like to have some accurate info to keep with this piece.

we will need pics but Police Positives were made for a lot longer than was Colt's police sidearm for a LONG time...before the Python and could be in many calibers (I had one in .32-20 WCF)...

what is written on the pistol for caliber???... .38 CTG would probably be .38 Special (.38 Cartridge)...the others should be smaller so .38 special wouldn't fit...

Fast is fine...accuracy is final.
Like what you have???...Thank a Vet.

It is definitely an oldie judging from the bakelite (hardened rubber) grips and foresight. A picture of the other side will help. It is a beauty and a gun to be treasured!

I'm on my way out the door so, more later...

It's later now...

First up, Calibre: Police Positive of that vintage were chambered in a number of different calibres. Significantly for you, .38 Colt New Police which was a slightly re-designed Colt version of the .38 S&W. This was cartridge used, and found lacking, by the US Army at the dawn of the 20th Century. Also, basically the same cartridge but with a much heavier .200 grain bullet, .38/200 cartridge, was used by the majority WWII British Empire nations for revolvers.

The grips, as I stated earlier, are a hardened rubber. They will break if not handled correctly. Note well that a set those grips are a highly priced and much coveted collector item by themselves.

Your revolver is one a Colt revolver collector would lust after given its apparent condition. I couldn't and wouldn't guess its value. You won't retire on what it is worth, but it would definitely be worth more on a collector market.

Definitely keep it, enjoy it, shoot it, and cherish it for the memory of a friend who thought highly enough of you to bequeath a small treasure to you.

It's a neat little revolver. I like the Police Positive and the Pocket Positive models. Congratulations.
