Newer Speer Gold Dot Bullets in 38 special?

Has anyone tried handloading Speer's newer 135 and 147 gn GD's in 38 special yet?

Hello. No, not yet. I've not run across the 135-gr. as either reloading component or in loaded factory ammunition.

Best.

Midway has both bullets as a component.

I have tried the 135 factory, it was pretty close to advertised vel in a 2". Hoewever I have not tired it in water or newsprint.

I just loaded up some 147s with Tite-group (a load that I was able to get a 158 SWCHP up to 1030 in a 2" so I expect the jacketed 147 to do just under 1,000).

They are ready to test but when I get home there is not enough daylight to chrono...perhaps Friday if I am lucky.

Both are good looking bullets and Speer has an interesting page on their website about loading them in .357 magnum. In short they are supposed to blow off the nose at high vel (like over 1100 fps) and the back half should hold together.

I gather the folks at Speer must think like me...they say you would not want to use this for hunting big game or self defense. I might point out that I am in a distinct minority here, a lot of folks would like just that kind of performance. This may be *the* bullet for the High velocity "energy dump" guys in .357.

It might also be the replacement for the soft lead HP in 2" .38s but I cannot say until further tests shows what it will do.

Onward,

Jim

Update;

Got to shoot a few over the chrono today (the sun was low and I had a heck of a time).

I don't publish load data (unless I am just quoting some manual) because there are so many variables one can get in trouble too easily. I will just say that my load with Tite-Group is slightly over the load listed as +P (for another bullet) in the current Lyman Manual.

It gave 920 fps in my 1 7/8" M-36 and 940 in my 2 1//4" 640 (.357). No pressure signs what so ever.

Unfortunately it hit 2" left at 25 yards in 3 of the 4 fixed sighted guns I tried. Groups were OK, 2-3" at 25 from standing slow fire.

I am going to explore a slower powder, hoping to hit closer to the sights and also to avoid charges so slight that I could too easily double charge a round without noticing.

Roll on,

Jim

Jim-thanks much, recently received 110, 135 and 147 gn GDHP's for the 38 special. Am planning on trying the 135 gn in 2 incher, but will probably work it up for the adjustable sighted 38 specials.

Will (eventually), concentrate on using the 135 and 147 grainers working up mid range 357 mag loads, for the shorter 357's owned.

Have also started trials with the 250 gn 45 LC GDHP. From the initial tests (highly unscientific), it needs to be driven faster than the slower loads listed for older revolvers, in order to get it to open up.

Well, the weather the past couple weeks has warmed up considerable, and the range is accessible. Been working on DA revolvers and Loads for Short Marlin, but took time to experiment with the new GD bullets.

From S&W 2 1/2 in M66

Speer 135 gn GDHP, Fed 100 primer, Win 357 brass, Moderately hard LFC, V V-N350

7.5 grains for about 1040 fps, excellent accuracy

8.0 grains for about 1100 fps, very good accuracy

8.5 grains for about 1160 fps, poor accuracy

Speer 147 gn GDHP, same other parameters as above

7.5 grains 1055 fps, decent accuracy

8.0 grains 1080 fps, average to poor accuracy

Speer 147 gn GDHP, Fed 100 primer, 14.0 gns V V-N110, Win 357 brass

S&W M28 for about 1200 fps average to poor accuracy

Marlin 1894 CP for about 1730 fps, average to poor

accuracy

It was too cold for usual unscientifc expansin tests when the M66 were tried, but the loads were very controllable. Especially after shooting Mid-range loads in M29 Mt Gun.

Yesterday tried the hotter loaded 147 grainers. From the M28, the bullet held together well, and folded over. From the Marlin , little was left of bullet, but it appeared to have folded over first. If fired into water, the petals may shear off, but not in the moist sand/loam (mostly sand) medium tried. Was disappointed with the accuarcy of the 147 grainer, considering used powder loads that give very good accuracy with other bullets in same weight range.

Speer is apparently coming out with other new GDHP's, designed for shorter barrels. Particuarly interested in the 230 grain one in 45 caliber.
