How to refinish brushed stainless steel?

This is on a Ruger Mk. II. Some scratches, nothing deep. Basically because having been laid off, I have too much time on my hands.

First, having been declared redundant myself, good luck with your situation. But, this will give you an opportunity to catch up on things you have been putting off!

Back when I was in the firearms industry, we used to use a progressive grit sandpaper system called Micro Mesh to prep metal for finishing. Look about for it. I am sure it is still available. We also used to use glass bead blasting to give things a soft finish. You can use a slow wire wheel but you had best know what you are doing there or you can get yourself into trouble.

If you have a Dremel I have had excellent results using their "Finishing abrasive buffs". They are kind of like a Scotch Brite and different grits.

The grit # belies the actual results and you should probably start with the 320 to establish your technique. It is easy to do, wear glasses because the wheels wear quickly but you should be able to do a whole pistol with one brush.

You don't have to worry about "divots" in the metal unless you fall asleep with the brush in one spot.

The 320 gives a real fine brush low luster look and the 280 will give a more "factory" look. Run it on low to med low.
