Replacement sights for FEG High Power

I am looking for some input regarding changing the sights on the FEG PJK-9HP browning clone I just purchased. I want something that is simple. Either a three dot or White outline with a single front dot is fine. I need one that can be done by a local smith or advice on where I can have it done that won't break the bank.

Replacement sights for FEG High Power

l believe all of the FEG PJK-9HP's have the front sight silver-soldered into the slide. To replace it, a gunsmith will have to grind off the old sight flush with the slide and mill a dovetail slot into the slide of the proper size for the aftermarket sight that you choose. (Anytime significant machining is involved, sight switching starts to run into money.) The newer PJK-9HP's have a really good front sight so there is no reason to do replace it, but the older ones have the same "half-moon" front sight as the pre-Mark II HP's and these aren't very good. One alternative is to take a needle file and file an inclined, flat surface on the rear of the "half-moon", to at least give you a flat, consistent sighting surface.

Insofar as the rear sight issue: I drug out my 3-4 year old PJK-9HP and compared its rear sight to some of my HP's. The dovetail (and the entire sight) on the rear sight on a Mark III HP was way larger than that of the PJK-9HP's rear sight. If you use an FN/Browning OEM factory fixed rear sight for the Mark III-genre of HP's (those made after 1989) you're going to have to have a dovetail slot milled into the slide for this larger rear sight. The dovetail of the sight on a Mark II HP appeared to be the same or very similar in dimensions to that on my PJK-9HP. The dovetail of the rear sight on a pre-Mark II HP (sometimes referred to as the "classic" HP) appeared to be a slightly larger.

This is what I would do: Take the handgun to a 'smith and have him mike the rear sight dovetail or dovetail slot on your PJK-9HP. Then you or he can check Brownells (www.brownells.com) for an aftermarket rear sight with features that you want that has a dovetail with dimensions that aren't too far off from the dimensions of the dovetial slot in your PJK-9HP. Depending on the dimensional relationships: (1) If the sight dovetail is a bit too large for your PJK-9HP's dovetail slot, it can be stoned down to the proper dimensions. (2) If it's very slightly too small the front and rear overhangs of the dovetail slot can be slightly bent down by tapping on them with a small steel bar and hammer, to tighten the slot up a bit.

There is one caveat to all this: If your PJK-9HP shoots pretty close to point-of-aim elevation-wise with its current sights (the aftermarket sights can be drifted right or left in their dovetail slots to adjust for windage), you want to make sure that the new sights will do the same by ensuring that the height relationships of them above the slide are the same as for the current sights. This is the "can of worms" when installing aftermarket fixed sights on a handgun: Getting everything so that the handgun shoots to point of aim. A certain amount of fine-tuning can be done on the sights by filing the front sight down with a 6-inch mill smooth file or the rear sight down with needle files, but not a lot. (Let us know if you have to do this, as there's some "tricks to the trade.")

(It should be mentioned that countless handgunners have spent innumerable hours, untold dollars and tons of frustration purchasing, switching and filing and stoning aftermarket sights to try to get a handgun to shoot to point-of-aim. But it can be done.)

Replacement sights for FEG High Power

PSI has a adjustable rear sight for the hi-power Vigilante that fits a PJK-9HP, .285 dovetail. There are three outlines to choose from. I put these on my low shooting PJK-9HP and it worked out great. Heres their website: http://www.precisionsights.com/tpu.html

lt7d101 , do you have a picture of your gun with the sights on it? I would like to see how they look on the gun. Did you use the factory front sight?

Replacement sights for FEG High Power

ray2001, sorry I don't have a picture. The sights are low mounts. The rear of the sight extends off the rear of the slide about 1/4". IMHO they look good. I left the FEG stock front sight in place. This particular pistol was shooting low. Thats the reason I replaced the rear sight. She is right on the money now and rivals my BHPs in accuracy, even if she is a rattle trap
