Hello,

Well, its a lot better than the G-42 that Glock is going to be rolling out soon. Smaller than the G-26 and in .380 ACP.

At a MSRP of $389.00, the Remington is going to be very, very popular! (Look out Kahr and Kel-Tec!).

Best,

Chris

larry,
The Pedersen design had to work around the patent of the tilting-down link of the 1911 by using an independent breechblock. The R53 in .45 ACP had this same type of set-up.

I am lucky enough to have been able to handle both the G42 and the R51 recently, and shoot the G42.

IMO the R51 will not take too much business from Kahr. It is way too big to be considered a pocket gun. I am not someone who will shy away from larger guns. I have carried 5" 1911's and Hi_Powers off duty in winter and summer for quite a few years and have been told and also read several thousand times that they are too big for concealed carry... which is BS.

I always liked the original 51 and have one in 32 and another in 380. I WILL likely buy an R51. I think it could be successful and really hope it is. It will make a great lightweight 9mm for a lot of folks, especially those who have been convinced they can't carry anything larger.

I am sure there are some who could carry the R51 in a pocket and will, especially if it is their primary. For me, a pocket gun is a backup, or a backup to a backup, and in that role, the smaller Kahr's (PMs) will not see much of a challenge. I even rely on the PM9 for an occasional "safe" area visit as a primary when all I have on is short pants and a T in the summer.

Now, the folks who like larger Kahr's (like the P9/CW9) as a primary.... yeah... the R51 will probably cut into some of that business if it proves to be rugged and reliable. If it doesn't, even just in the beginning, it may not survive. IMO Remington does not have the rep as a handgun manufacturer to have one survive initial bad reports from the consumer and heaven forbid a recall or two... like some of the other long term handgun companies do. It almost seems like letting the shooting public beta test a new product has become part of their development process these days. A recall would hurt the R51 and I really hope that does not happen.

The G42 is a GREAT little 9mm backup gun... chambered in .380 for some reason. IMO, it has the same issue. It is not going to replace a P380 or CW380 (or others) for a deep cover backup role.... it's too big. As a primary 380 for women, elderly, anyone recoil sensitive... it would be a better pick than the P380, the LCP, the P3AT, or any of the smaller ones because it will be eiasier to shoot well, and less recoil. If you don't fall into one of those categories though I would question the choice of .380 for a primary. If they start making the G42 in 9mm which I believe that platform would certainly support... I will buy one myself and it just might replace my PM9 as a backup, mainly because it has a much more similar trigger (especially reset) to my duty weapon.
