SIG SAUER P226 PROBLEMS - Chapter Two

A few months ago I experienced persistent, and consistent, problems while firing the P226 9mm by Sig Sauer.

It would fail to feed from the magazine properly with every magazine load I put through it.

The diagnosis was that it was magazine related, but I was unable to test that theory until recently.

The solution to the problems? Use Mec Gar mags.

But, while shooting it I also discovered that due to my large hands and the way I grip my other semi-autos (1911, HK, FN, Glock, etc.) I was getting my thumb on the top of the slide release on the SIG and therefore the slide failed to lock back while shooting.

I wish SIG put their slide release forward of the decocking lever.

Anyway, here's a video report, I was very pleased with the accuracy of the SIG P226.

Has anyone else had a fail to feed issue with their SIG? What was the solution for you?

Amsdorf,

My two P226 have been flawless...as have all my Sigs. I use factory or Mec-Gar magazines exclusively.

I'm thinking your grip may be part of the issue. Good video, as always.

Definitely a grip issue since untold numbers of end users haven't had an issue with the SIGs' control positions.

Solution? Possibly change to a thumb low grip since changing hand size generally isn't practical.

For right handed shooters the big SIG,doesn't lend itself well to the High Thumbs foreword grip , favored by the 1911 and tac crowds,

Most of the problems with them we found based on 30+ years carrying and working on them where the mag's, the old fashion "zipper" backs the welds would give up and cause problems, "users" would get the mag spring in wrong after break down, improper lube usage etc.

best bet we found for those with large hands was to replace the trigger with the short model, and stay away from any after market grip plates,,, With the New E2 type grip plates and the short reset trigger it should go a long way in helping grip the 226 types

Some of the new Sig mags made by Checkmate that come with new Sig's have been troublesome .. As with hi-powers mec-gars fix most feed problems. I find a when a mag fails just smash it with a hammer and scrap it.

1) New 226 has a very stiff set of springs. Mine would not feed right or lock back until broken in.

2. If your hand or thumb rubs on the slide it acts like a brake and will make it short stroke so it won't feed right. With gloves on, this is a definite possibility.

3) Limp wristing also causes short cycling (not your case).

4) Avoid junk brand mags, Mecgars are usually first quality they are OEM for many gun makers.

Regarding reliability: I've never had a problem with my current issue P226 in .40S&W, or the P220 in .45acp I was issued years ago. I do use a high thumb shooting grip and experience failure to lock back on occasion. I prfer this hand position for several reasons so I simply deal with it, if it occurs. On than that both pistols have been/were utterly reliable.

The issue with my 226 was entirely the cheapo Checkmate mags, replaced with MecGars and no worries.
