It seems like there was a recent discussion here about what us older guys with our older eyes (I'm 62) are doing to manage with open sights but I couldn't find the thread. Although not perfect, fiber optic sights have really helped me. Anyway, in the digital edition of Shooting Sports USA, starting on page 18, there is a pretty interesting article about this very subject. Thought it might be of interest to some folks here.
I just wish there were better solutions for handguns, as I can still use peep sights on rifles. I like red dots on pistols, but they are either too big or if they are small enough they aren't reliable/easy to turn on/affordable enough to put on all my handguns. Lasers are good, but again, not made for all guns or kind of expensive or make it difficult to find a holster.
Actually there are now red dots that are small enough to fit on handguns and rugged enough to merit some consideration. I am thinking of Suarez Internationals TSD. Not that I am planning to getting one but...
GLOCK 17 with the milled slide by One Source Tactical (OST) Suarez International and a Trijicon RMR Red Dot sight with suppressor sights on my GLOCK 17 (I won't ever use a suppressor...not legal for anyone in Illinois)
FNP-45 Tactical comes milled with Trijicon night suppressor sights and added Trijicon RMR Red Dot sight...
The GLOCK 17 is much smaller and lighter than the big FNP-45 Tactical but I prefer the "feel" of the more traditional FNP-45 Tac so far...I like the adjustable LED on the GLOCK better than the static LED dot on the FNP-45 Tac but they are both excellent...still wrestling with the learning curve...
Those are great, I've handled the guns with them installed, but the cost of milling the slide and installing the RMR puts them out of reach. I've used the smaller red dots that replace the rear sights, but they just don't hold up or keep their aim.
Silversport, I thought the Aimpoint on my Anaconda was pretty small but it is nothing like the one on your Glock. All in all I like the Aimpoint, battery life is incredibly long and it does hold zero with 44 mag loads.
Mine is used for hunting so I took an old Bianchi holster I had for it and cut a slit for the Aimpoint. Works out pretty good for my intended purpose.
I am struggling with the same difficulties. I can't get the gun sight in focus and still see the target. I have purchased a laser grip to try to improve my accuracy. Maybe it has, but now there is public proof for how much I wobble.
Take a good look at those RMR sights, they're the future of handgunning. I admit I've always poo-pooed "gadgets" like that. I compete in a bullseye league every monday night and shoot with irons. While I'm competing against shooters using red dots I still manage to wind up in the winners circle the majority of time. It's getting increasingly difficult though and I've been forced to admit sights like these are somewhere in my future.
