Arisaka Type 99 7.7mm Sniper

I have an opportunity to purchase a VG+ Type 99 w/o the scope but with the proper side mount. All still in grease. Any idea what this would be worth?

romeofoxtrot,

Sounds like you are one the trail of hard to find Japanese sniper, however, beware, there are many fakes out there. As for the price, its very hard to price something I can't see, at one time I could have given you a ball park price as I was collecting Japanese militaria, but that was a few years ago. There are three different models of the Arisaka sniper rifle that I am aware of, the Type 97 which is based on the Type 38 [6.5 rd] and two Type 99 versions, yours sounds like the the "straight bolt version, with the mount on the left side so they could use stripper clips, and the other one had a bent bolt but this one had to be loaded one round at a time due to the positioning of the scope above the receiver.

Having said all this, if its a original ??? and without the original scope, and the rifle in 90% condition, I ball park it in the $1200 to $1400 range, with the straight bolt original Type 99 w/ original scope it just about doubles that price, but that is one I saw last year, and I have only seen one of them in the last 5 years and that was at the Louisville, Ky show last year.

Arisaka Type 99 7.7mm Sniper

Hi Papabear--

And thanks for responding. Actually, the Type 99 I am referring to has the longer and bent bolt. Does that change the estimate?

Thanks again.

I would say it does but I'm no expert, I suggest you go to the "Firearms Of The Rising Sun" forum of gunboards.com, they have a couple of guys there that know far more on the Japanese Militaria than I do, sorry I couldn't help you further.

Arisaka Type 99 7.7mm Sniper

Wow, I sure hope you put up some photos here if you get it.

I was only familiar with the Type 97 6.5mm Arisaka sniper and a single type of Type 99 sniper rifle made from 1942 on with a fixed 4x scope. I did not know there were two 7.7mm versions.

I will say, as a onetime owner of a Type 99 7.7mm Arisaka, a Type 38 carbine, and a Type I Carcano Japtalian Navy rifle that the bolt is utterly simple and quick to take apart and that tests done after WWII indicated the Type 38 action was stronger than the German 98k.

Good luck! Sounds very interesting!

Arisaka Type 99 7.7mm Sniper

The collection that is for sale includes 9 rifles: the sniper, at least two carbines, a Jap Carcano, two fairly typical Type 99's, and three I haven't seen yet. I may buy the whole collection if I can get the price right. Thanks for the responses.

For some now unclear hesitation on my part last summer I let this collection get past me. He wanted $2200 for all 9. A fellow who traffics in such items some distance away but whom I know bought them all, and now the prices are about twice what was being asked then. According to this dealer, they are about now at fair market value for Japanese wartime weaponry. Wish I could bend over and kick myself!!!
