Collectible Mosin Nagants?

Hey,

Besides an original Mosin Nagant sniper, what are the most collectible/sought after Mosins?

And also, is there a source for original or somewhat original snipers, or are those reproductions you see all the time the only MN sniper options?

I love the Mosins, but I'd like to add a neat collectible to my standard M91/30 and M44 options.

Collectible Mosin Nagants?

Hello,

Collecting is always a bit subjective. You'll/should probably get started by pursuing what you find most interesting. As you may know, the Soviet Red Army used lots of sniper rifles in the Great Patriotic Motherland War vs. Germany. At a certain point, those rifles would be downgraded after hard use and be stripped of scopes and other hardware. Many of these former snipers abound on the market, and folks turn 'em into approximate snipers or restored snipers. Others like to do the restoration themselves. Still others try to get authentic sniper-ized Mosins.

Take a gander at the table on rarity of different Mosin Nagant variations at 7.62x54r.net and see which models are scarce, and which of those exerts the strongest appeal to you.

My milsurp rifle collection never really survived grad-school expenses. For now I'm satisfied with kind of a representative sample. My first Mosin was a Finn, borne from interest in my ancestor's "old country" and the weapons of the World Wars. My second was a late Soviet M44 because I wanted representative "enemy weapons" from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam to offset WWII and Korea-era U.S. issue rifles and carbines. Serious collectors often strive for breadth and depth in a collection and pour resources into it. You might start out by thinking about what type of rifle fascinates you most. YMMV.

Thanks for the info, Dave.

I guess the one that intrigues me the most is some form of a sniper Mosin Nagant.

Plus, I would like to pick up a Finn Mosin at some point.

I'd look for a United States made version. Remington made them, as did one other company - I forget the name.

Yes: New England Westinghouse.

Czarist Russia couldn't crank enough out of the assembly lines, so contracts were made with noted U.S. rifle maker Remington and Westinghouse. With U.S. entry into WWI, some of these rifles, which were not shipped after the Russian Revolution broke out, were used for marksmanship training and drill purposes in the U.S. The U.S. expeditionary force in Russia was also equipped with these rifles.

The great thing about Mosin collecting, is one can find one of these that did make it to Russia, was captured and re-captured who-knows-how-many-times, and finally wound up in, say, Finland, and bears all of the arcane markings of this continuous re-issue! They are out there, as are the snipers. Keep looking. As for me, I regret not snatching up a Polish M44 when I had the chance to get one new in the wrapper from the Radom factory. A Hungarian 91/30 might be cool to find too.

If by chance you run into one rechambered for .30-'03 or .30-'06...

It's probably not safe to fire. Some were done like this for government trials, and others were done by gunsmiths. The 7.62x63 chambering of the .30-'06 put the pressure of the round out further in the barrel, and these should not be shot.

I forget the name of the conversions which were safe to fire, but they're very rare.

I have one of the New England Westinghouse MN91's. It was captured by the Finns, has the "SA" stamp on the receiver and the Finn war time stock with the rounded finger joint, and also the lock ring bayonet, but it was made by Remington.
