More .250 Savage Ackley Improved...

Gents,

Started a new thread for the 250 Savage A.I. Project.

Pac-Nor returned the barreled action with a Remington Varmint profile barrel that I had fluted. Looks real sexy. The lads there do good work and this thing should shoot like a house afire.

Called Talley for rings and mounts. Got the QD rings. These guys understand customer service. I had the rings and mounts in two days shipped priority mail!

Right now I'm waiting on the stock to be machine inletted and profiled. They say 8 weeks for that. I'm going to go with a black/grey laminate stock and will pillar/glass bed it. Then it's off to the range. Hope to have it done around Xmas.

Will add some pictures later.

Leaning toward a 2.5 X 10 Luppie for it. It's gonna make on heck of a live varmint rig...

Gents,

Have everything for the project now, but the stock. It's due in the next week to 10 days.

I settled on a laminated black/grey with pachmayr pad to go with the stainless steel of the rifle. Talley mounts and rings are ready to go. Have a 3 X 9 to mount initially for testing.

Fitting and glassing the stock should take a week or so...once it arrives. It's a Winchester "Marksman" style stock and should work well with for the intended purpose.

I have the camera and will get some pics posted of the project parts once the stock arrives.

Gents,

The stock for the 250 Savage A.I. arrived today. Black/Grey laminiate. Now all I have to do is get some inletting done and pictures taken. NICE. It's going to look great with that stainless action and barrel!

Can't wait to get it all done and see how it shoots those 108 gr JLK match bullets I have for it...

Retirement IS good.

I love a project (the "journey" being 90% of the enjoyment).
Should be a tack driver.
What are your loads? I've had great luck with RL powder (19,22) in my .25-06 (100/110 gr. Nos. BT). Groups of 1 1/2" @ 300 yds. are common.
Would love to see photos of the completed project.

Best.

Hello Wes,

While you may "fighting over the camera" with the wife, I am very interested to see how your project develops. I have always enjoyed learning how folks that have the "ways and means" to get custom rifles built for them and need to improve my knowledge base on the .250 Savage A.I.

Given the fact that you are definitely a "rifleman" with a lot of deep and meaningful information on this forum, it will really enjoyable to learn how the project winds up! I suspect that the action is a Remington 700 BDL action?

Please keep us posted!

Best,

Chris

Chris,

No Rem 700 for the .250 project! This is a stainless steel Montana 1999 action. It takes the best of the Mauser breaching system and Wincester Model 70 and melds them into a really slick action. Barrel is a Pac-Nor Super Match with Rem 700 varmint taper that is flutted.

Look up Montana Rifles on the internet and it will give you an overview.

One nice thing is that the "short action" allows you to use cartridges with up to a 3.250" OAL! Somebody was thinking when they designed that puppy...
