9mm Ammo Comparisons

Howdy folks,

I thought some of you might find this data interesting. Last Sunday a buddy and I were shooting out in the desert, using my chronograph for the first time. John fired various 9mm rounds through his FN HP and his Kahr K9.

I should note the barrel of the 3.5" K9 is polygonal rifling, which seems to increase the velocity a bit. So it may not be a totally reliable comparison for other 3.5" or similar lenght barrels that do not have polygonal rifling. Sorry I am a LEO not a ballistics expert, but thought I should note that fact too.

WCC 124 FMJ Nato [RA9124N]

Federal 115 JHP [9BP]

Speer 124 GD std [53730]

HP avg 1188.0, es 34

K9 avg 1081.3, es 13

Speer 124 GD +P [53617]

HP avg 1292.4, es 17

K9 avg 1181.2, es 40 (group 1)

K9 avg 1190.6, es 96 (group 2)

Speer 115 GD +P+ [unk]

HP avg 1399.3, es 74

K9 (was not fired)

I know we have a lot of HP fans here, so I thought they would find this useful. Hope it gives you some information to consider.

In our next desert shooting session (whenever we can arrange it) I will try to fire as many of these same rounds as possible from my Sig P226 with the 9mm down barrel, and edit this post to include that data as well.

Shoot well and often,

9mm Ammo Comparisons

Hello, Mr. twoguns and thanks for the data. It is pretty much jibes with previous chronograph sessions I've done with some of the same loads. I don't recall breaking 1200 ft/sec with the Federal 115-gr. JHP (std pressure) but usually hit in the 1165 to 1180 ft/sec range, depending upon the lot number and HP being used. Your buddy may have a "fast" bbl, a good thing.

Best.

9mm Ammo Comparisons

Howdy sir,

Actually that is one of you old favorites, the 9BP round. It has some age to it, as it was what I was carrying when my agency issued it back in the late 80s. I don't know if its age might have any bearing on things or not. Beyond a few days immediately post Hurricane Andrew, it has always been stored in good conditions. It was stored in a military ammo can during Andrew, so I doubt if the elements had much affect on it.

The pistol is a fairly new FN HP I bought from my buddy when he was having trouble finding a BHP Mk III for me in matte black. I added nightsights to it, then sold it to John when he learned he could carry it as he had been grandfathered in with a BHP.

John is an ex-homicide detective from Tucson PD, who retired from them and went to work as a special agent with a smaller state agency. He is assigned to my office and was my office mate when I was going to work. He has never been a firearms instructor, but has always done a lot of shooting and is more than a fair shot too. I grin now when he calls me and tells me he just outshot most of the young pups in my office using what many of them call a "dinosaur" pistol (grinning).

He called me right after his first night shoot to thank me again for selling him that pistol. It was the first pistol he has ever owned with nightsights, and he could not believe how well he shot using it that night. In fact he stepped all over some toes, when he said something like "what is wrong with you folks - everyone of you have nightsights - just aim you pistols".

John said most of the young pups responded that he was old and had been shooting longer than most of them had been alive. One of two of the other "old farts" laughed and said, yep, so maybe you might want to listen to his advice. He is right, use the nightsights and aim your shots. The little fella who likes to perch on my shoulder and whisper things in my ear was laughing so hard he fell off. Maybe if the youth of America could take their pep and energy and combine it with some "dinosaur" wisdom we would all be better off, lol.

I don't know if you have noticed any real difference between say a BHP Mk III and the FN version, but as I noted his is a fairly new one, less than a year old now. I don't know it that has any bearing on his barrel being a bit faster, or if it was the age of the rounds, or both. But I know he sure does love his primary carry pistol now.

As I have noted, HPs have to be fun guns for me now, because my grip locks the slide release lever up during each magazine. So when I found out John could carry it, I decided I would rather have him carrying it daily, than having it sit in my safe most of the time. Besides us old ex-cops have to look out for each other too, before we become extinct (grinning).

Howdy folks,

Sorry I just realized I had neglected to post the stock numbers for the various rounds. So I have modified my previous post to list the stock number when known.

Thanks TG!

It really helps sort out which load is what to have the catalog/stock numbers. A year or so back myself and another fellow were discussing some load or other here and it i didn't sink in for some time we were comparing results of two totally different loads.

Regards,

Pat

Mr. Pat,

You are welcome sir. I agree it does make things easier to follow. I have debated a specific round myself more than once only to discover we were talking about two different loads by the same manufacturer. I had noted them on my pages, but simply forgot to list them.
